Six Aussie Masters Records Fall in Two Sydney Meets

By Stephen J. Thomas

SYDNEY, Australia, May 29. FIVE Aussie short course marks were set at the Manly Carnival (May 15) and that’s all in meters Down Under.

Australian Masters Athlete of the Year Jenny Whiteley resumed her record-breaking campaign in her second year in the 45-49 age group, trimming 0.13 off her own national mark in the 50 backstroke to clock 34.22. Whiteley set eleven global and forty-two national standards last year so she will be hard pressed to break anything she doesn’t already own in this country.

Visiting 28-year-old student Nahomi Eriguchi set three national records in her age group. The former Japanese national team-member clocked 1:09.06 for the 100 individual medley slashing 2.39 seconds off the old mark, then trimmed 0.42 of a second of the 50 fly to record 30.49, then made it three for three in the 200 back, stroking 2:27.56 to take 3.28 seconds off the old record.

Hilda Lindfield slashed over 28-seconds off the old national mark for the 200 backstroke in her 85-89 age group clocking 08:14.15.

Last weekend at the Blacktown long course meet Jenny Whiteley was back in action taking just over five seconds off her Australian mark for the 200 backstroke touching in 2:50.42. The world mark stands at 2:38.04 held by Patty Landers. Whiteley told SwimInfo she won't be heading off to sunny Italy for the forthcoming World Champs, preferring a 3.2km ocean swim off the Pacific island of Vanuatu.
