Siobhan Haughey Downs 15-Year-Old National 100 Breast SCM Record

Siobhan Haughey has placed her name in another spot on the Hong Kong record board by taking down a 15-year-old mark in the short-course meters 100 breaststroke.

Haughey swam 1:04.48 on Saturday at the Hong Kong Age Group Championships at Victoria Park Swimming Pool. That obliterates the record set on Nov. 21, 2009, by Yvette Kong at 1:05.92 at a World Cup stop in Singapore.

The only news is that it wasn’t a record Haughey already had. The 26-year-old has long packed a punch in breaststroke, despite it not being her specialty. It’s just a second off the Asian record of 1:03.15 from Tang Qianting of China at the 2022 Chinese Championships.

Haughey’s obvious specialty is mid-distance free, the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 100 free and 200 free and the silver medalist at the 2023 World Championships. She has three career gold medals at Short-Course Worlds in the 100 free and 200 free, plus a 100 free silver and 400 free bronze.

She has medaled internationally in breaststroke once, at the 2022 Asian Games with a bronze in the 50. But she may be finding form in the event, having won gold at the U.S. Open in December over a field that included reigning Olympic gold medalist Lydia Jacoby and American standout Kate Douglass.

Haughey is in good form as the 2024 World Aquatics Championships open in Doha for swimmers next week. Haughey is entered in the 100 breast there, where she’s the fifth seed with a time of 1:06.05. She’s also entered in the 100 free and 200 free, the top seed in both. She’s in search of her first long-course Worlds gold, her only piece of hardware a silver in the 100 free from Fukuoka last summer.

With the swim, Haughey owns Hong Kong records in the long-course meters 50, 100, 200 and 400 free; 50 and 100 breast; 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. In SCM, she owns the 50, 100, 200 and 400 free; 50, 100 and 200 breast; and 100, 200 and 400 IM.
