Simone Manuel Sets Pac 12 Meet Record in Prelims

FEDERAL WAY – California put up enough qualifiers to lock down a Pac 12 Women’s Championship barring any crazy disqualification madness. But, Stanford’s Simone Manuel had the race of the morning with a Pac 12 meet mark in the 100 free.

200 back

Missy Franklin led the way for the California Golden Bears to drop the hammer in the 200-yard back.

Franklin topped prelims with an NCAA A cut time of 1:51.38, while Melanie Klaren (1:52.95), Elizabeth Pelton (1:53.73) and Kelly Naze (1:54.15) went 2-4-6.

Arizona’s Bonnie Brandon was the top non-Cal A finalist with a third-seeded time of 1:53.63.

100 free

Stanford’s Simone Manuel took down the Pac 12 meet record with a 47.01 this morning.  That swim beat Missy Franklin’s 2014 record of 47.17 and put her within striking distance of taking down Natalie Coughlin’s 13-year-old Pac 12 record of 47.00.

Manuel’s teammate Lia Neal qualified second this morning with a time of 47.71, while California’s Kaylin Bing (48.18) and Farida Osman (48.27) grabbed third and fourth.

200 breast

USC’s Andrea Kropp (2:09.28) and Stanford’s Katie Olsen (2:09.69) both cleared 2:10 to take the top two spots into tonight’s finale in the 200 breast.

Arizona’s Emma Schoettmer (2:10.35), Utah’s Stina Colleou (2:10.68) and California’s Marina Garcia Urzainqui (2:10.97) qualified third through fifth.

200 fly

California put away an incredible day of qualifying with a 1-2-3 in the 200 fly.

Noemie Thomas paced prelims with a 1:54.53, while Jasmine Mau (1:55.69) and Rachel Bootsma (1:55.84) turned in the second and third top times.

Stanford’s Janet Hu was the top non-Cal swimmer with a fourth-seeded 1:56.47.
