Shane Ryan Named Big Ten Male Swimmer of the Week for Second Straight Week

Penn State’s Shane Ryan earned yet another Big Ten Male Swimmer of the Week honor this week after a three-win effort against Navy. On the women’s side, Ohio State sprinter Liz Li was recognized. Read more about all award-winners below.

Male Swimmer of the Week
Shane Ryan, Penn State
Sr. – Havertown, Pa. – Haverford

  • Won three individual events for Penn State against Navy, breaking his own McCoy Natatorium record in the 100-yard freestyle by touching in 42.99 seconds
  • Touched first in the 50-yard freestyle (19.76), 100-yard freestyle (42.99) and the 100-yard butterfly (48.01)
  • Contributed to a first-place mark in the 400-yard freestyle relay (2:59.83), swimming the final leg to secure the come-from-behind victory and close out the meet
  • Recorded NCAA B-cut qualifying times in all three of his individual events
  • Earns his eighth career Swimmer of the Week honor

Male Diver of the Week
Steele Johnson, Purdue
So. – Carmel, Ind. – Laurel Springs

  • Swept the diving events in Purdue’s dual meet against Indiana, scoring 393.90 in the one-meter event and 436.60 in the platform event
  • Averaged 77.20 points per dive in the platform event and 71.40 points per dive on the one-meter springboard
  • The 2015-16 Academic All-Big Ten honoree recorded NCAA Zone qualifying marks in both events
  • Earns his 12th Diver of the Week award
  • Last Purdue Diver of the Week: Steele Johnson (Dec. 23, 2016)

Male Freshman of the Week
Kaelan Freund, Penn State
Lethbridge, Alberta – Chinook

  • Recorded four first-place finishes to help Penn State defeat Navy in dual meet action
  • Touched first in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.10), 200-yard breaststroke (2:02.17) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.60)
  • Recorded an NCAA B-cut qualifying time in the 100-yard breaststroke (55.10)
  • Contributed to a first-place mark in the 200-yard medley relay with times of 1:29.48
  • Earns his third career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Penn State Freshman of the Week: Kaelan Freund (Jan. 18, 2017)

Female Swimmer of the Week
Liz Li, Ohio State
Jr. – Shenyang, China

  • Collected four first-place finishes on the weekend, including a pair of victories at Michigan State and in Ohio State’s meet against Akron and Pittsburgh
  • Won the 50-yard freestyle (22.49) and the 100-yard butterfly at Michigan State (53.98) and against Akron and Pittsburgh (53.98)
  • Contributed to a first-place result in the 200-yard medley relay at Michigan State with a time of 1:42.66
  • Earns her third career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award
  • Last Ohio State Swimmer of the Week: Liz Li (Nov. 16, 2016)

Female Diver of the Week
Olivia Rosendahl, Northwestern
So. – Los Angeles, Calif. – Immaculate Heart

  • Swept the diving events with a score of 292.10 on the one-meter springboard and 307.40 in the platform event in Northwestern’s dual meet against Iowa
  • Recorded NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both events
  • Earns her third career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Northwestern Diver of the Week: Olivia Rosendahl (Oct. 26, 2016)

Female Freshman of the Week
Hannah Burvill, Iowa
Pyrford, Great Britain – Notre Dame Senior School, Cobham

  • Collected four first-place finishes in Iowa’s dual-meet victory over conference rival Northwestern
  • Touched first in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events, recording times of 50.68 and 1:49.26, respectively
  • Contributed to first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay with times of 1:41.13 and 3:23.91, respectively
  • Earns her third Freshman of the Week award
  • Last Iowa Freshman of the Week: Hannah Burvill (Dec. 14, 2016)

congrats to Shane Ryan he is really deserved to be in the list, i have seen him swimming (video) he really have something special in the pool , when he swims he seems like flying in the pool 🙂
