Shane Forker Dominates Distance on First Day of Mt. Hood Futures Championship

The opening day of the first annual Futures Championship at the Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon was highlighted by a fast swim by Shane Forker in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle. Forker dominated the race with a time of 15:44.65, clinching an Olympic Trials qualifying time. This time was also the fastest result for the men’s 1500 of any of the three futures meets that all began today.

Following Forker was Eric Fierro, who earned second place with a time of 15:56.59. Christopher Miller was third with a finish of 16:05.54.

On the women’s side, in the 800-meter freestyle, Haley Yelle won the race in a time of 8:51.61. She was followed by 13 year old Yuging Xie who swam an impressive 8:54.18. In third was Sydney Franzen who was 8:56.46.

In the women’s 800-meter freestyle relay, the David Arden Racing Team dominated with the team of Claire Pinson (2:05.63) Halladay Kinsey (2:04.26) Kassidy Henson (2:06.72) and Joanna Curry (2:06.72) putting together a swift swim of 8:23.33. They were followed by North Bay Aquatics, whose group of Mikeala Dahlke (2:05.07) Claire Birchenough (2:08.10) Ava Salmi (2:09.92) and Emma McCarthy (2:02.85) came together for a final time of 8:25.94. In third, the Mission Viejo Nadadores’s team of Jessica Epps (2:04.98) Savannah DuPuis (2:08.97) Yuging Xie (2:08.05) and Sydney Franzen (2:05.88) were 8:27.88.

The men’s 800-meter freestyle went to the North Bay Aquatics team of Sheldon Boboff (1:52.67) Bradley Cline (1:51.77) Theo Andrews (1:55.17) and Nicholas Bigot (1:54.80) with a dominating time of 7:34.41. They led the field by nine seconds, and were followed by the David Arden Racing Team’s group of Eric Fierro (1:53.05) Terry Johnson (1:54.95) Soren Dickens (2:00.08) and Riley Hickman (1:55.31) who came together for a time of 7:43.42. Grabbing the bronze was the Canyons Aquatic Club whose team of Kevin Dai (1:55.24) Brandon Young (1:57.93) Jonathan Ellery (1:54.93) and Tanner Olson (1:56.03) came together for a time of 7:44.13.

The Futures Championship will continue tomorrow and conclude on Sunday.
