SEC Saturday Recap: Florida Downs FGCU; Kentucky Takes Saluki Invite

The SEC Conference spread themselves across the Eastern half of the country for a series of dual meets and invites.

Saluki Invite: Northwestern, Mizzou, Kentucky, & Southern Illinois

The two-day Saluki Invite concluded Saturday with the Kentucky men and women posting top scores. The Mizzou men and women finished second overall, while the Northwestern men were third and host Southern Illinois finished fourth. The Southern Illinois women finished third out of three women’s teams.

Kentucky nabbed relay victories in all but the women’s 400 free relay, where the Mizzou women powered to victory with a 3:24.76.

Southern Illinois collected a handful of wins including a top showing by Bryn Handley in the women’s 1000 free. Handley won the event by more than four seconds with a 10:01.77.

Mizzou delivered a 1-2 finish in the women’s 50 free, as Ann Ochitwa and Sarah Thompson posted times of 23.56 and 24.13.

Ochitwa would later add a win in the 100 fly to her name with a time of 53.69.

Ali Galyer continued to dominate the backstroke events by setting a new pool record in the women’s 100 back. The sophomore from Kentucky touched in a 53.81, eliminating the previous pool record of 54.38 from 2014 and earning herself a NCAA ‘B’ cut in the process.

Galyer added a top showing of 1:50.07 in the 200 free to her name later in the meet.

The Kentucky women swept the podium in the women’s 200 breaststroke, led by Bailey Bonnett and her time of 2:14.30. Teammates Madison Winstead (2:16.83) and Morgan Belli (2:17.35) were second and third.

Giovanny Lima of Mizzou collected a NCAA ‘B’ cut along with his 1:36.60 win in the men’s 200 free, while the men’s 400 IM fell to the Kentucky duo of Glenn Brown (3:55.39) and Connor Blandford (3:56.75).

FGC vs. Florida

The Florida women went head-to-head with the women of Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) on Saturday, with the Gators coming out on top 173-125.

FGCU took home victories in four of the 16 contested events, including a sweep of the top three spots in the women’s 100 fly. That sweep was led by sophomore Cassidy Fry, who stopped the clock at a 55.32.

Sherridon Dressel collected two individual victories for Florida, turning in top times in both the 100 back (53.62) and 200 IM (2:04.68).

Junior Gator Hannah Burns doubled up her distance victories with top showings in both the 1000 free (9:53.14) and the 500 free (4:53.51).

The 100 breast featured a tight race between Florida’s Dani Keymont and FGCU’s Petra Halmai. Keymont got her hand to the wall a shy .06 seconds ahead of Halmai to win with a 1:04.79 over Halmai’s 1:04.85.

Auburn vs. South Carolina

Auburn traveled to Columbia, South Carolina this weekend and came away with a pair of wins. The men won over South Carolina 164-131, while the women took home the victory with a total of 166.5 points to South Carolina’s 133.5.

Auburn claimed three of the four relays in competition, while South Carolina delivered a 1-2 punch in the men’s 200 free relay.

Fynn Minuth collected two individual victories for the Gamecocks, posting first place finishes in both the 200 fly (1:47.19) and 500 free (4:24.98). Teammate Akaram Mahmoud added a distance victory in the 1000 free of 9:05.18.

Auburn’s Zachary Apple swept the men’s sprint freestyle events, taking first in the 50 (20.61), 100 (44.59), and 200 (1:39.29).

Erin Falconer of Auburn added individual wins in both the 200 (1:49.60) and 500 (4:56.81) freestyles, while South Carolina’s Julia Vincent claimed victory in both the 1-meter (317.78) and 3-meter (380.63) diving events.

Arkansas vs. Vanderbilt

Arkansas continued their successful winning streak by defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores 133-67 points on Saturday.

Olivia Weekley of Arkansas dominated the sprint events, taking home victories in both the 50 (23.80) and 100 (51.71) freestyles.

Fellow Razorback senior Jessie Garrison collected a double of her own with top showing in the 200 free (1:51.77) and 200 fly (2:01.81).

Vanderbilt freshman Hannah Hunt led a trio of Commodores to a strong finish of the 200 breast, finishing first with a 2:21.91 after Arkansas’ Sydney Angell (2:19.09) entered as an exhibition swim.

Saturday’s victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores shifts the Razorbacks to 10-0 all-time in competition against Vanderbilt.
