SCAD Vs. Wingate

WINGATE, North Carolina, November 17. THE Wingate University men's swimming team continues its strong start to the 2007-08 season, as the Bulldogs defeated the Savannah College of Art and Design 157-48 Saturday afternoon at the Wingate University Natatorium. The SCAD Bees won the women's dual meet, taking a 135-69 win over the host Bulldogs.

On the afternoon, Wingate won all 11 events. With the team victory, the Bulldog men improve to 5-0 overall on the young season. SCAD falls to 2-4 overall. Wingate will travel to Savannah Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 to participate in the SCAD College Invitational.

Bulldog sophomore Mason Norman (Duluth, Ga.) won three events for the hosts. A 2007 CSCAA Academic All-American Scholar Athlete, Norman touched first in the 50 Free (21.57) and the 100 Free (47.34). The 100 Free clocking is a Wingate pool record for Norman, who also earned All-American honors in the pool last season.

Earlier in the day, Norman teamed with senior Sergey Vlashchenko (Habarovsk, Russia) and sophomores Scott Stephens (Columbia, S.C.) and Daniel DeFrancisco (Cali, Colombia) to take the checkered flag in the 200 Medley Relay. The Bulldog foursome recorded a time of 1:38.76 in the 200 Medley Relay.

Bulldog sophomore Gus Chagas (Recife, Brazil) also picked up three wins. The 2007 NCAA Division II national champion in the 200 Freestyle, Chagas won the 200 Free (1:46.56) and the 100 Backstroke (54.54). Chagas teamed with junior Blake Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.), sophomore Kyle Corcoran (Kent, Wash.) and freshman Lucas Willers (Tacoma, Wash.) to win the 800 Free Relay with a time of 7:06.09.

Wright, Corcoran and Vlashchenko earned two wins each. In addition to the aforementioned relay victory, Wright endured the 1650 Free with a winning time of 16:55.26. Corcoran won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:57.23. Vlashchenko added a victory in the 100 Breaststroke (1:00.27) to his crown from the 200 Medley Relay.

The Bulldogs swept the distance events, as junior Matthew Dugan (Wilson, N.C.) won the 500 Free with a time of 4:59.67. An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® candidate, Dugan was second to Wright in the 1650 Free with a time of 17:11.51.

For SCAD, freshman Danny Recordon (Portland, Ore.) lost a tight race to Wingate's Mason Norman in the 50 Free. Recordon placed second with a time of 21.69 (to Norman's 21.57). Both the Bulldogs and the Bees are members of the Blue Grass Mountain Conference.

The SCAD women avenged a 63-59 double-dual loss to Wingate on Jan. 20, 2007 with Saturday's victory. The Bees won nine of the 11 women's events. SCAD's win overshadowed a solid effort by Wingate senior Maria Vlashchenko (Khabarovsk, Russia). The 2007 All-American won two individual events for the Bulldogs.

Vlashchenko touched first in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.75) and the 200 Individual Medley (2:12.22). Vlashchenko and Gus Chagas were last week's BGMC Swimmer of the Week honorees.

SCAD junior Cassie Dixon (Las Cruces, N.M.) was the big winner on the women's side, as she collected three first-place ribbons. Dixon started the day as a member of SCAD's victorious 200 Medley Relay team (1:51.77). Dixon also won the 50 Free (24.86) and the 100 Free (54.52).

Both SCAD junior Carly Keith (Montclair, Va.) and senior Julie Glaser (Easton, Pa.) won twice each for the visitors. Keith and Glaser joined Dixon and freshman Liz Roberts (Alexandria, Va.) on the 200 Medley Relay team. Keith won the 100 Butterfly (1:01.08), while Glaser took the 100 Backstroke (1:02.15).

The SCAD women even their 2007-08 ledger at 3-3 overall with the dual meet victory Saturday. The Wingate women are 2-3 overall. The Bulldogs will travel to Savannah Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 to participate in the SCAD College Invitational.
