Savannah Skow Distance Double Leads Princeton to Cannon Trophy over Rutgers
Savannah Skow pulled off the distance double to lead Princeton to a win over in-state rival Rutgers on Friday, 134-09.
The win in their season debut gives Princeton the Cannon Trophy to show from their trip to Piscataway. Skow was the primary reason why, fueled by one mighty impressive early double.
Skow started the meet by swimming fly on the Tigers’ winning 200 medley relay, teaming with Sophia Sunwoo, Delaney Herr and Veronique Rossouw to win in 1:39.81, the winning margin just .33 seconds.
Barely dried off, Skow was back on the block to contest the 1,000 free in the very next event, going 9:55.32 in a 1-2 result with teammate Phoebe Arbuckle. Skow also won the 500 free in 4:47.96, a 1-3-4 result for the Tigers that was instrumental in setting the final margin.
Chloe Kim (1:49.94) and Natalie Farquhar went 1-2 in the 200 free for Princeton. Dakota Tucker uncorked a time of 1:57.66 to win the 200 individual medley, with Herr second. Kim doubled up with a win in the 200 fly in 2:00.07. Tucker picked up her second victory by going 2:12.15 in the 200 breaststroke.
Princeton got an early boost in diving by neutralizing Rutgers’ advantage in that area. Charlotte Norman scored 288.15 points to win 1-meter for Princeton, Rutgers taking spots two through four. The Scarlet Knights showed that potency on 3-meter, with Katerina Hoffman scored 342.68 to lead three scorers topping 300 points in a podium sweep.
Emilianna Gonzalez won the 50 free in 22.37, besting Roussouw’s 22.73 and Sunwoo’s 22.86. Her time is the second-fastest in program history, tying … Anna Vlachou, who captured the 100 free in 49.77 with teammate Journei Webster second. Florence Robitaille added a victory in the 200 backstroke in 1:57.23.
Rutgers finished off the night by winning the 200 freestyle relay with the team of Webster, Gonzalez, Lena Bauer and Vlachou going 1:31.07 to beat Princeton by nine tenths.
