Sarah Sjöström To Compete At 2024 World Championships In Doha As Sweden Announce 13-Strong Squad

Sarah Sjöström can continue to rewrite the World Championship record books after she was named in the Sweden squad for Doha in February 2024.

While 13 have been named so far, swimmers have until 19 December to qualify with the final squad to be announced on 20 December.

While the likes of David Popovici and Adam Peaty have said they’ll skip the meet and the USA will send one athlete per event, Sjostrom will travel to the Qatari capital where the swimming programme will be held from 11-18 February.

There Sjöström will seek to defend her titles in the 50 fly and 50 free, little more than six months after she became the most decorated medallist in individual events in World Championship history in Fukuoka.

Her fifth straight 50 fly title elevated the four-time Olympic medallist alongside Michael Phelps with 20 solo medals before a third consecutive 50 free gold – after lowering the world record to 23.61 in the semis – made it 21 individual honours.

Twelve golds, six silvers and three bronzes.

Sjöström will be joined in Doha by 2022 European 100 fly champion Louise Hansson and sister Sophie, who won the continental 100br title in 2020.

Erik Persson, 200 breaststroke silver medallist at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, is among six men on the team.

WOMEN:

  • Michelle Coleman, Track SF (50m freestyle, 100m freestyle)
  • Louise Hansson, Helsingborgs S (100m butterfly)
  • Sophie Hansson, Helsingborgs S (100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke)
  • Sara Junevik, Falu SS (50m butterfly)
  • Hanna Rosvall, Helsingborgs S (100m backstroke)
  • Sarah Sjöström, Södertörns SS (50m butterfly, 50m freestyle)
  • Sofia Åstedt, SK Elfsborg (relay)

MEN:

  • Isak Eliasson, Spårvägen SF (relay)
  • Robin Hanson, Spårvägen SF (relay)
  • Oskar Hoff, Landskrona S (50 meter butterfly)
  • Elias Persson, Malmö KK (relay)
  • Erik Persson, Kungsbacka SS (100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke)
  • Björn Seeliger, SK Neptun (relay)

Swedish Swimming Federation captain Martina Aronsson said:

“We are looking forward to the Olympic year 2024.

“In terms of competition, we are off to a flying start with the World Championships in Doha in February.

“Through this competition, we want to take advantage of the chance to build championship experience before Paris.

“The pre-nominated squad presented today will be supplemented, among other things, during the autumn World Cup.

“The qualification window is open until 19 December 2023. The final World Championship squad will be announced on 20 December – like an early Christmas present!”
