Santa Clara Swim Club Finding Places to Train After Mechanical Issues Close Swim Center Indefinitely

With the start of an Olympic year, the top swimmers at the Santa Clara Swim Club have plenty to deal with.

But mechanical issues at the Santa Clara International Swim Center have given the club even more to deal with.

The City of Santa Clara has closed the facility indefinitely due those mechanical issues, according to a Fox KTVU report.

At best, the situation will cause swimmers to find other places to swim for a few days. At worst, it could mean the club needs a new place to train indefinitely, leading up to the Olympic Trials in June. The club has earned more than 80 Olympic medals in its history.

“We did actually have people show up for training on Friday morning to the signs and couldn’t get in and that created a little bit of a panic,” Santa Clara Swim Club Head Coach Kevin Zacher told KTVU.

The club, which started in 1951, has moved training to the Mary Gomez Swim Center in the meantime, which according to the report doesn’t have the same space.

But the club is focused on supporting the swimmers and their focus as much as possible.

“Since we received the news on Friday, the staff, the board, the Santa Clara Swim Club, we’ve been working on finding the water time for athletes, so they don’t have to worry about anything. It’s our job,” coach Dasha Cocol told KTVU.
