SANTA CLARA, California, June 23. SOME of the top names in the American arsenal will be in action next week at the George Haines International Swim Center when the Santa Clara International Invitational gets under way. The field will be headlined by Michael Phelps, who won seven gold medals at the World Championships in Melbourne, five in world-record time.
Among the other big names expected in the Golden State will be Ryan Lochte and Brendan Hansen, along with Tara Kirk, Erik Vendt and Kaitlin Sandeno. Vendt recently enjoyed a strong showing in Europe at the Mare Nostrum Series. As for Hansen, the world-record holder in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events will race his prime disciplines as a tuneup for the United States National Championships later this summer in Indianapolis.
