Ryan Lochte Tops Caeleb Dressel in 200 IM at ISCA Senior Cup; Dressel Bests Joseph Schooling in 50 Fly

Some of the biggest names in the sport have opted to use the ISCA Senior Cup in St. Petersburg, Florida as their latest tuneup for the all-important summer that is on the horizon. And they certainly didn’t disappoint on Wednesday night, as Caeleb Dressel and Ryan Lochte logged strong performances.

In what can be considered a solid marker on the road to the United States Olympic Trials in Omaha, the 36-year-old Lochte finished first in the 200-meter individual medley in 1:59.72, the only sub-2:00 effort of the night. Lochte was followed to the wall by Dressel, who demonstrated his range by clocking a time of 2:00.50. Lochte had control throughout the race, although Dressel was significantly quicker on the closing freestyle leg, where his split of 28.04 made the outcome look closer. Lochte closed in 28.82, and came back an event later to win the 100 backstroke in 55.92.

Dressel returned later in the evening to claim victory in the 50 butterfly over Joseph Schooling. In a showdown of former Bolles Sharks stars, Dressel was timed in 23.98 while Schooling, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 butterfly, was a tenth back in 24.08, a time that was also posted by William Davis.

The meet is being conducted in a split format, with short-course racing taking place during the preliminaries and long-course competition taking place during finals. In the morning session, there were several impressive performances in short-course yards, headlined by Dressel and Schooling both going under the 21-second barrier in the 50 butterfly.

In the women’s 200 individual medley, Reka Gyorgy was the top finisher in 2:13.77 while 15-year-old Leah Hayes checked in at 2:15.24. Farida Osman prevailed in the women’s 50 butterfly in 26.08.
