Ryan Lochte & Caeleb Dressel Star With Impressive Times at ISCA Prelims

It was a strong morning of preliminary action for Ryan Lochte and Caeleb Dressel at the ISCA International Senior Cup, as the Olympians and Team USA stars qualified for the finals of several events in St. Petersburg. Lochte and Dressel, along with a handful of other notable names, are using the meet as a tuneup for the key summer season ahead.

The prelim session opened with the 400-yard individual medley, where Lochte nailed down the top seed with a time of 3:40.42. Dressel followed in the second position on the strength of a 3:44.15 effort. It remains to be seen whether Lochte, at 36 years old, will include the 400 medley in his Olympic Trials program in June. He was the 2012 Olympic champion in the event.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Dressel headlined a strong field and claimed the top seed for the final behind a mark of 45.46. Dressel was followed by Singapore’s Joseph Schooling, the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 fly, who was timed in 46.34. Matthew Josa was next in 46.36, with Jack Conger fifth in 46.64 and Lochte in eighth in 47.66.

Dressel and Lochte also advanced to the finals of the 200 freestyle. Dressel posted the top qualifying time, going 1:34.59, while Lochte was third in 1:36.05. Norbert Szabo finished in between at 1:35.78.

The finals will be held in the long-course format and it will be interesting to see how many of the events Dressel and Lochte keep on their evening programs.
