Ryan Hoffer Uses Stellar Underwaters to Go Perfect 3-For-3 in Individual Events With 100 Free Victory

Cal senior Ryan Hoffer dominated the 100 freestyle final in Greensboro to win his third individual NCAA title of the weekend with a 40.89, moving himself up to fourth all-time in the event, improving on his 40.90 best time from this morning. Hoffer adds to his wins this weekend in the 50 free and 100 butterfly as his win helped Cal stay in the team race, sitting behind Texas by 27 points with four events to go.

Hoffer had a lot of hype surrounding him out of high school as he was a 41.23 as a junior in 2015, capturing the attention of a lot of swimming fans when he had stellar underwaters at age 17. He lived up to the hype, capturing his third individual title of the weekend over Texas’ Daniel Krueger (41.59), who had the fastest time in the nation all year, and Drew Kibler (41.59), who made the final in both the 200 and 500 freestyle.

Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger finished in fourth for the Bears at 41.74 as the 400 free relay will certainly get interesting between Texas and Cal at the end of the night.

Alabama’s Matt King (41.76) placed fifth ahead of Florida’s Kieran Smith (41.89), LSU’s Brooks Curry (41.99) and Purdue’s Nikola Acin (42.15).

Both Seeliger and King are freshmen which should make things interesting for the next three years in this event.

California now has 13 NCAA titles in the 100 freestyle as Hoffer joins the likes of Matt Biondi (1985-1987), Bart Kizierowski (1999), Anthony Ervin (2000-2002), Duje Draganja (2003, 2005), and Nathan Adrian (2009-2011) as winners of the event for the Golden Bears.
