Ryan Hoffer arrived at Cal as one of the top high school sprinters ever, but he didn’t quite reach those lofty marks as a freshman. But this year at the NCAA championships, Hoffer has been as advertised. Thursday night, he won the 50 free in 18.63 after posting a 18.58 in prelims, and he led the Bears to a win in the 200 free relay and second place in the 400 medley relay.

Afterwards, Hoffer explained what the night had been like for the Golden Bears and how they were using monentum to push for a national championship. He also discussed what it meant for him to return to his best times after a down freshman year, explaining that it took some time to adjust the Cal coach Dave Durden’s training and for Durden to adjust to him.
