Ruta Meilutyte Misses 50 Breaststroke World Record By 0.04 In European Mark Of 28.60 At FINA World Cup

Ruta Meilutyte was just 0.04secs outside the 50m breaststroke world record as she set a European mark of 28.60 on the final day of the first leg of the FINA World Cup in Berlin.

The Lithuanian rattled Alia Atkinson‘s 28.56 world record set at the Budapest stop of the 2018 World Cup with the second-fastest time in history.

It clipped 0.21 from the previous European record of 28.81 held jointly by Meilutyte and Italian Benedetta Pilato.

Sophie Hansson (29.84) and Anastasia Gorbenko (30.03) were next home.

Matt Sates Is Four-Midable

Matt Sates completed the 200/400IM double with a dominant victory in the longer race in 4:02.95 ahead of Alberto Razzetti (4:04.74) and Hubert Kos (4:06.44).

He then overhauled Kyle Chalmers to win the 200 free in the final men’s event in Berlin.

Chalmers had led throughout but a last 50 of 25.34 propelled the South African past him and into the wall in 1:40.88.

The Australian clocked 1:41.09 with Kieran Smith of the USA third in 1:42.30.

Having claimed the 400 free on the opening evening,  it meant Sates – last year’s World Cup men’s winner – came away with four victories.

Nic Fink Completes Breaststroke Clean Sweep; Hat-Trick For Siobhan Haughey

Nic Fink completed the breaststroke hat-trick after coming from fifth with 50 to go to pip Marco Koch to the 200br by 0.01.

The American has been on fine form in the German capital with victory in the 50 (25.86) and 100 (56.43) before returning on Sunday to unleash a last 50 of 31.27 which guided him into the wall in 2:05.74.

Koch, who led the field at the 150 mark, came home in 2:05.75 with Dawid Wiekiera third in 2:06.66.

Haughey added the 100 free in 51.59 to her 200 and 400 free titles ahead of Madi Wilson (52.00) and Marrit Steenbergen (52.06).

Double Gold For Beata Nelson; Shaine Casas Wins Second Back Title

Beata Nelson added the 200 back to the 100, leading throughout to stop the clock at 2:02.59.

Kylie Masse led home fellow Canadian Ingrid Wilm in 2:03.24 to 2:04.53.

The USA swimmer then won the final event of the three-day meet when she took the 200IM title in 2:06.80.

Anastasia Gorbenko (2:07.60) and Abbie Wood (2:07.63) rounded out the podium

Shaine Casas also claimed his second backstroke title when he led from start to finish to add the 100 to the 200 gold in 49.54.

Thomas Ceccon – the long-course world record-holder – roared back with the second-swiftest 50 of 25.34 to finish in 49.62 with Javier Acevedo and Apostolos Christou sharing the third step on the podium in 50.16.

Dylan Carter Wins 50 Fly; No Clean Sweep For Chad Le Clos

Dylan Carter added the 50 fly to the 50 free and back titles in 22.13 with Chad le Clos adding silver to his 100 and 200 fly golds in 22.21 as Matteo Rivolta rounded out the podium in 22.38.

Louise Hansson split 25.85/29.48 en-route to a 100 fly win in 55.33, the Swede enjoying victory by more than 1.5 secs ahead of Maaike de Waard (56.95) and Laura Lahtinen (57.13).

Isabel Gose led home a Germany one-two as she enjoyed a commanding win in the 800 free, stopping the clock at 8:14.88 to give the home fans something to cheer about.

Germany teammate Sarah Wellbrock came home next, more than eight seconds adrift in 8:23.07 with Maddy Gough of Australia third in 8:26.48.
