Rocky Mountain Invite

GOLDEN, Colorado, October 15. THE Colorado School of Mines swimming & diving teams opened the 2011-12 season yesterday hosting the annual Rocky Mountain Invite at the CSM Natatorium. The men scored 697 points to finish second while the women finished third scoring 405.5 points.

Freshman Zack Gertig had an impressive collegiate debut highlighted by his swim in the 200 freestyle. Gertig won the event and swam an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:43.93. Gertig finished just .38 seconds out of first place in the 100 freestyle. Gerting along with Andrew Zerwick, Matt Bisping and Daniel Peter won the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:36.44 finishing three seconds ahead of the runner-up relay.

The Oredigger men went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke led by Zach Nahman who won the event in a time of 54.07. Right behind him in second place was Jacob Best (55.79) and Mack King (55.89). King also finished third in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.05.

The national runner-up in the 200 backstroke last season, Zerwick, won the event by nearly three second with a time of 1:59.49. Peter won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.94 beating the next fastest swimmer by five seconds and finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:02.31).

Kyle Burt won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.34, was the runner-up in the 400 IM (4:32.30) and finished third in the 200 freestyle as he recorded a time of 1:48.21.

Andrew Corman had a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.13) while Matt Lemke placed third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:32.39). Diver Tim Waite placed fourth on the three-meter board (230.80) and fifth on the one-meter board (216.60).

For the CSM women, Cayla Wood won the 400 IM by three seconds with a time of 4:53.74. She also finished runner-up in the 200 butterfly (2:18.45) and helped the 400 medley relay comprised of Monica Mick, Jackie Mays and Michaela McNiff finish third with a time of 4:12.34.

Stevie Davidson finished runner-up in the 200 freestyle (2:03.38) and third in the 500 freestyle (5:35.99). Davidson was also part of the 400 freestyle relay along with Mays, McNiff and Lauren Lundquist that finished third with a time of 3:55.50.
Mays placed third in the 50 freestyle (26.08) while Rainey Perkins was third in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 12:03.63.

Diver Sarah Moore finished fourth on the one-meter board (196.55) while Christina Bailo placed fourth on the three-meter board (171.25).

Mines will compete at the Air Force Invitational on Friday, Oct. 28th and then host Colorado Mesa and Morningside College on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the CSM Natatorium.
