Penn Charter junior Reece Whitley achieved a new National Independent High School record mark while swimming in prelims of day two of the 2017 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming & Diving Championships.

Whitley uncorked a 52.35 to soar past Jacob Molacek’s 2014 record of 52.92. That time also took down his own meet record of 52.97, set at last year’s championships.

Comparing splits:

  • Molacek (2014): 24.45/28.47 – 52.92
  • Whitley (2017): 25.00/27.35 – 52.35

The junior will return to finals tonight to defend his title and seek to lower his record again.

All results can be found on Meet Mobile – Easterns 2017
