Notre Dame capped a sweep of victories against West Virginia in the second day of a two-day meet Saturday, highlighted by three pool records. The 18th-ranked Irish men beat West Virginia, 271-82. The women, also ranked 18th in the nation, scored a 244-127 victory.

The distance set led the way in Notre Dame’s final dual meet. Madeline LaPorte went first, clocking in at 9:57.31 to win the event in a Mylan Park pool record. Jack Hoagland followed by going 8:49.95 in the event, a personal-best time and the second-fastest in program history.

Diver David Petrison added a program record in platform diving, scoring 346.80 in winning the event. It comes a day after Kelly Straub set the women’s program record on platform.

“It was a great session of swimming & diving for our group this morning,” Notre Dame coach Mike Litzinger said. “Both Madeline LaPorte and Jack Hoagland led the way with Mylan Park Pool records in the 1000 Free, and David Petrison improved his Notre Dame record on the 10-meter.”

Hoagland also won the 200 individual medley for Notre Dame in an NCAA B-cut time of 1:46.49. Alec DeLong won the 200 free, Sadler McKeen claimed the 100 back and Topher Stensby outdueled Ryen van Wyk to win the 50 free.

Tyler Christianson won the men’s 200 breaststroke in an NCAA B cut of 1:56.90, while runner-up JP Becker crept into the top 10 in program history in 1:58.13.

Notre Dame’s men swept both relays, with the squad of Brendan Santana, Josh Bottleberghe, Carson Wilburn and Stensby claiming the 200 medley and Wilburn, Stensby, DeLong and McKeen claiming the 400 free.

The women got a boost with two diving wins Saturday, Straub nipping Annie Wiese for the win on the one-meter board and the two reversing places in the three-meter.

Sydney Whiting started Notre Dame with a win in the 200 free. Ellie Jew (200 IM), Megan Deuel (200 fly) and Elizabeth Fry (200 breast) added victories. The Irish swept both relays: Carly Quast, Coleen Gillilan, Cailey Grunhard and Rachel Wittmer in the 200 medley; Quast, Whiting, Grunhard and Wittmer in the 400 free.

West Virginia picked up three event wins on the day. Emily Haimes sprinted to victory in the 50 free in 23.40, edging Wittmer and Grunhard in a race where the top five finishers were separated by .12 seconds. Ally Vannetta won the 100 back, and Jordan Buechler was second in the 200 IM.

David Dixon won the men’s 200 fly in 1:46.79.

“We had a very strong day, and it was a great way to send off our seniors,” West Virginia coach Vic Riggs said. “As a team, we competed very well. Once again, we had several lifetime best times, our relays were strong and, as a whole, we improved from our last meet. Now, we’ll get back to work and get ready for Big 12s.”
