Queens (NC), South Carolina vs. Duke

DURHAM, North Carolina, January 15. THE Duke swimming and diving team split the win for the first meet of the season facing South Carolina and Queens University of Charlotte. The women picked up their second and third win of the season, besting both teams (160-140 and 237-47), while the men were unable to knock off the undefeated Gamecocks (135-165), but did pick up a win against Queens (241-23).

The women opened the meet strong, claiming first in the 200 medley relay, and did not let up against the Gamecocks through every event. Sophomore Cara Vogel and junior Steffi Niessl claimed the top two spots in the 100 back, while junior Meghan Dwyer and Vogel also took the 200 back.

"We're extremely proud of our performances today," said head coach Dan Colella. "Going into the meet this morning … we knew that it was going to be extremely competitive on both sides. Truthfully the women just came out from the start and applied the pressure. "

Although the men could not hold on to their early lead against the nationally ranked Gamecocks, they did manage to dominate many events. In the first event of the 200 medley relay, the men's B team not only claimed first, but broke the school record with a time of 1:32.28.

Sophomore Ben Hwang and senior Nick Garvy took first and second respectively in the 50 free with a time of 20.49 a d 20.98. Hwang also took first in the 100 free.

"South Carolina's a top 25 program, so we knew it was going to be tough to beat them this weekend," said Colella. "What we were really able to do was just race. What I told them was that these were the kind of guys that we were going to see when we get to the ACC Championships: Virginia, UNC and teams like this. I couldn't have been more pleased with the way they performed."

But the Blue Devils best finish came in the last event when the men not only set their fastest in-season time (3:02.87), but also beat the South Carolina in the 400 free relay.

On the diving side, sophomore Abby Johnston broke the pool record formally held by Olympic silver medalist and University of Houston diver, Anastasia Pozdniakova, with a score of 377.85 on the three-meter board. The Duke men also claimed a first and second finish on the three-meter, as well as first, third, fourth and fifth to dominate the one-meter.

The Blue Devils will next travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Cavaliers in an 11:00 a.m. match-up on Sunday, Jan. 23.
