Qin Haiyang Blasts 2:07.55 to Broach His 200 Breast Chinese Record

Qin Haiyang won the men’s 200 breaststroke at Chinese Nationals on Friday, his time of 2:07.55 putting a scare into his national record set in 2017.

Qin had been 2:07.35 at the National Games in 2017, setting the national mark in the 200 breast. He’s found a potent vein of form this year, the 23-year-old re-setting the 50 breast and 100 breast marks this spring, the latter at this meet. He’ll go for the breaststroke sweep on Saturday, the final day of the Fusu Technology Cup 2023 at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center Swimming Hall.

Second was Dong Zhihao in 2:09.17, also under the Olympic A standard.

The penultimate day brought plenty of fast swimming and a few stellar races. The men’s 100 butterfly on Thursday was decided by .01 between Wang Changhao and Sun Jiajun, the former winning. Friday, there was not a shred of time between in a dead heat for the 50 fly win.

Both clocked in at 23.41 seconds. Wang had set a national record in this event at the spring championships in March in 23.25. Chen Juner was third in 23.70, one of five swimmers under 23.86. That includes Olympian Wu Peng, making a comeback at age 35, in fifth.

The 800 free turned into the second win of the week for Fei Liwei. He stopped the watch at 7:49.97, a winning margin of more than three seconds over Liu Peixin. Fei’s time is an Olympic A cut, Liu’s a B cut. Fifth was 100/200 champ Pan Zhanle, who broke eight minutes in 7:59.15 in what is probably the upper limit of his distance specialty.

On the women’s side, the sprinters flexed their muscle in a strong showing in the 50 free. Cheng Yujie won in 24.53, edging Wu Quinfeng by .03 seconds. Relay standbys Zhang Yufei (24.62) and Yang Yunxuan (24.72) followed in third and fourth. The times includes thee A cuts and a B cut for Yang.

Ye Shiwen won the women’s 200 breast in 2:22.44. That swim routed the field by nearly five seconds. It also put a charge into the national record held since the super-suited days of 2009 at 2:21.37 by Qi Hu. Zhu Letian finished second in 2:27.40.
