Purdue Women Add Seven to Class of 2010

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, June 17. THE Purdue women's swimming and diving team has added seven swimmers with its 2010 class, head coach John Klinge announced Wednesday.

"We are extremely excited about our incoming student-athletes," Klinge said. "All of them have the potential to make an immediate impact as part of our program."

The 2010 class, which is the second brought to West Lafayette by Klinge and 14th assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Darlene Renie has recruited, is made up of swimmers from five different states. The group features four student-athletes whose career-best times would have qualified them for the 2010 NCAA Championships and six who have been either state or national finalists.

Julie Comodeca comes in with the ability to contribute in the freestyle and backstroke events. The Cincinnati native and Anderson High School product was a YMCA national finalist. Comodeca's career-best time of 1 minute, 48.85 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle would have qualified her for last season's national championship meet. She also has a career-best clocking of 57.34 in the 100 backstroke, which would have ranked fourth on last year's Boilermaker squad.

Colleen Drew is one of three members of the class from Indiana. The Carmel native won the state title in the 500 freestyle as a senior, and her career-best time of 4:52.24 in that event would have been an NCAA ‘B' cut in 2010. Her win helped lead Carmel High School to its 24th straight IHSAA crown. Her work in the classroom was noticed as well, with the National Honors Society member being recognized as a Scholastic All-American as a senior. Drew is the second member of her immediate family, following older brother Richard, to attend Purdue and one of many in her extended family.

Samantha Feulner was named MVP of her Jefferson Senior High School team in Bloomington, Minn., all four years. Her senior year she also was named All-State after breaking a sectional record in the 200 freestyle and then medaling at the state meet with a school-record swim in the 100 freestyle. Feulner won the Athena Award as Jefferson's Outstanding Female Athlete. In the classroom, she was a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar. Both of her parents, as well as older sister Lauren, attended Purdue.

Emily Fogle enters Purdue fresh off consecutive state titles in the 100 breaststroke. The North Barrington, Ill., native claimed the crowns her junior and senior seasons at Barrington High School and also won the 50 breaststroke at the Irish Nationals as part of the NCSA All-Star Team. Fogle was a 12-time All-American between the lanes and also was a two-time letterwinner in water polo. Her career-best time of 1:01.13 in the 100 breaststroke would have easily been accepted into the 2010 NCAA Championships. Fogle's sister, Sara, just completed her sophomore season as a swimmer at Vermont.

Brittany Fozkos brings a wealth of team winning experience into the fold. While swimming for Chesterton High School, the Valparaiso, Ind., native helped lead Chesterton to conference and sectional titles each of her four years. She won 12 medals at state championship meets throughout her career, including four as a sophomore and four more as a senior. Fozkos, who also lettered in track and field as a freshman, is following her parents after both earned degrees from Purdue.

Tracy Glaser has the longest trip to the Purdue campus, coming all the way from Montgomery, Texas, to contest the breaststroke and IM events for the Boilermakers. Glaser won three state titles, including the 100 breaststroke as a junior, and twice finished second in the 200 IM. She broke 12 school records and one regional record during her time at Montgomery High School and served as team captain her final three seasons. Glaser, who was a member of the National Honor Society, also was named a USA Swimming Academic All-American and an All-Montgomery County Scholar Athlete as a senior.

Missy Robinson is traveling the least among members of this class, hailing from Veedersburg, Ind., just 40 miles southwest of West Lafayette. She placed in the top 12 in four different races during her time at Crawfordsville High School, with a high of third in the 100 breaststroke. Her swimming helped extend Crawfordsville's streak of consecutive sectional titles to eight and also made her a three-time All-American. Outside of the pool, Robinson was a National Honors Society member and ran cross country as a freshman.

Each student-athlete is set to enroll for the fall semester and join the Boilermakers for the 2010-11 campaign.
