Pro Swim Series, Day Four Prelims: Kate Douglass Advances to Pair of Finals, Including 100 Free Showdown with Anna Moesch
The deck was still buzzing over Kate Douglass’ world record in the 50-meter freestyle when Saturday morning’s prelims at the TYR Pro Series in Indianapolis got underway. The last day of competition at the Indiana University Natatorium featured men’s and women’s heats in the 50 butterfly, 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, with the meet serving as a tuneup opportunity for multiple athletes set to race at August’s Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine.
Here is an event-by-event recap of the Saturday morning action:
Women’s 50 Butterfly
Kate Douglass wasted little time maintaining the momentum she generated from her world record in the 50 freestyle on Friday night when the Team USA star nabbed the top seed for the final of the 50 butterfly. Douglass delivered a time of 25.31, not far off her personal best of 25.24. Joining Douglass in sub-26 territory was training partner Claire Curzan, who touched the wall in 25.88.

Men’s 50 Butterfly
Looking for an Indy sweep of the butterfly events, Ilya Kharun locked down Lane Four for the final of the 50 butterfly, as he covered his lap in 23.20. Kharun has already won the 100 fly and 200 fly in dominant fashion and will be favored to add the sprint title to his collection during finals. Kharun has already been 22.64 this year.
Michael Andrew (23.37) and Dylan Carter (23.39) turned in the second- and third-fastest times of the morning while Caeleb Dressel, the American-record holder, advanced to the evening session by placing seventh in 23.74.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke
Estonia’s Eneli Jefimova, who enjoyed a strong freshman campaign at North Carolina State, posted the lone sub-1:07 performance in the prelims of the 100 breaststroke. The 19-year-old went 1:06.94 to finish ahead of South Africa’s Aimee Canny (1:07.65) and American Emma Weber (1:07.83), both part of the University of Virginia machine.
Kate Douglass opted for a declared false start to focus on the 100 freestyle at the end of the session. Douglass already landed the top seed in the 50 butterfly.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke
Can Van Mathias take down the five-year-old American record in the 100 breaststroke during finals? Having already set an American record in the 50 breaststroke earlier in the meet, Mathias blistered a 58.32 in the prelims of the 100 breast on Saturday morning. The time wasn’t far off Michael Andrew’s American record of 58.14 and Mathias’ personal best of 58.19, set earlier this year at the Bergen Swim Festival. It seems the American standard will be under pressure during finals, with a sub-58 outing also on the radar.
Luke Barr qualified as the second seed, going 1:00.06.

Women’s 100 Freestyle
A showdown is looming in the final of the women’s 100 freestyle, as Anna Moesch clocked 52.88 for the top seed in the final and set up a duel with training partner Kate Douglass (53.77) in the final. Moesch went 51.94 for an American record last month and Douglass is coming off her world record in the 50 freestyle from Friday night. It would not be a surprise if Sarah Sjostrom’s world record of 51.71 is in jeopardy.
Qualifying second for the final was teenage standout Rylee Erisman, who went 53.66.

The final event of the morning saw Patrick Sammon notch the fastest time in the men’s 100 freestyle, a 48.15 that was ahead of the 48.36 of Kaii Winkler. Grant House clocked a 48.55 for third. Earlier this week, Winkler (North Carolina State) broke the German record in the 100 butterfly.
