Powell, Raleigh Earn ACC Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week Honors

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, October 17. FLORIDA State junior Ian Powell and sophomore Christie Raleigh swept the ACC Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week honors after their impressive performances which helped lead FSU to a pair of season opening wins over Clemson on Saturday, October 7, 2006. This is the first time that both Powell and Raleigh have received this award.

"They both had great legs on relays that got the meet started really well," head coach Neil Harper said. "Then to count on them for two more wins and three more wins, respectively is something that you can not diminish. We are excited about what they did and I think it is a boost for the rest of the team. Their swims provided positive reinforcements for the rest of the team and I think played a big part to why the team swam well. I'm glad that they got the recognition. There were obviously some other good swims but it was good to see that Ian's (Powell) and Christie's (Raleigh) were recognized because they both had very strong swims of a high level."

Powell earned four victories during the FSU men's win over Clemson 198-97. Powell picked up his first victory swimming the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:31.53. He then recorded three individual event victories taking the 200 fly (1:49.34), 200 back (1:50.00) and 100 fly (50.27). After the first two weeks of competition Powell has the fastest times in the ACC in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 50 back.

Raleigh recorded three first-place finishes and a third in the 100 back (57.85) as the FSU women's team defeated Clemson 179-116. Raleigh recorded two NCAA "B" cut times as she picked up wins in the 50 free (23.03) and 100 free (50.72). She also swam the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay that touched in 1:43.11. Raleigh's marks in the 50 free, 100 free and 50 back are currently the fastest in the ACC.
