Potential bidders to the organisation of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in 2022 and 2024 gathered today in Lausanne (SUI) for an information meeting on the bidding procedure for this competition. In 2022 and 2024, the Championships will be held in conjunction with the FINA World Aquatics Convention, while the 2024 edition will also comprise the FINA World Sports Medicine Congress.

National Federations/Cities of Chinese Taipei, Germany, Hungary (Budapest), Russia (Kazan) and Switzerland were briefed on the benefit, economic impact and legacy generated with the staging of these Championships. Presentations on marketing, digital strategy, TV broadcasting, budgeting, GMS (FINA General Management System) and milestones on the bidding procedure were provided to the national representatives.

The meeting was also attended by FINA’s Marketing Agent Dentsu, and some FINA partners and suppliers, such as Myrtha Pool, Omega and RedTorch. A delegation from Doha (QAT) was also in Lausanne to underline the benefits and the successful activities related to the organisation of the last FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), held in December 2014.

“The FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) is not only a spectacular sport event, it is also a unique occasion to gather the FINA family and provide them with a significant business opportunity, exchange of knowledge and tribute to our Stars through the FINA World Aquatics Convention and the FINA Gala ‘Soirée des Etoiles’,” said Mr. Cornel Marculescu, FINA Executive Director. “For about 10 days, the city hosting these championships will vibrate with a superb Aquatic Festival and its important legacy will remain an important added-value for the local community, the entire region and will even be felt country-wise,” concluded Mr. Marculescu.

After this meeting, NF/Cities will have to confirm their formal intention to bid, and then make a final presentation to the FINA Bureau in July 2017, with the occasion of the FINA World Championships in Budapest (HUN). Then, the FINA Bureau will decide on the hosts for the 2022 and 2024 rendezvous and immediately announces the result of the vote in a Press Conference.

Following the 2016 event in Windsor (CAN), the two subsequent editions of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) will take place in 2018 in Hangzhou (CHN) and in 2020 in Abu Dhabi (UAE).
