Positive COVID-19 Test Shuts Down Canadian High Performance Centre in Ontario

A positive COVID-19 test among “a member of the training group” at Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre in Ontario has caused it to be closed indefinitely.

The move is precautionary, Swimming Canada announced Friday, and is in line with its Return to Swim protocol. Those guidelines adhere to regulations by the Government of Ontario and the City of Toronto. The name of the athlete that tested positive was not disclosed.

From the statement:

Upon being informed that the member of the training group was experiencing symptoms, the person was immediately removed from the group, underwent a test that day and has been isolating. Protocols include strict monitoring of daily attendance, allowing all close contacts to be isolated. Testing of close contacts began within hours. As yet there is no evidence of transmission at the pool.

The High Performance Centre in Ontario is one of three training groups across the country that are home to many of the nation’s top swimming talents. It’s coached by Ben Titley and Ryan Mallette. Among the swimmers based out of the HPC Ontario, per Swimming Canada’s national team database, are Penny Oleksiak, Sydney Pickrem, Rebecca Smith, Kayla Sanchez, Taylor Ruck and Yuri Kisil. Canadian Olympic Trials will be held in April in Toronto.
