Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference: Day Two

MECHANICSBURG, Pennsylvania, February 22. THE West Chester University men's and women's swimming teams are currently in first place following the second day of competition at the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Swimming Championships being hosted at Cumberland Valley High School. The Golden Ram men have totaled 256 points while the women have accumulated 234 points.

Clarion University is in second place on both sides with the men having a two-day total of 219.50 points and the women 184 points.

On the women's side, Indiana University (Pa.) is third with 146 points, followed by Edinboro in fourth (134) and Shippensburg in fifth (99). For the men, Shippensburg is currently in third place with 147.50 points with Indiana and Kutztown in fourth and fifth with 120 and 117 points, respectively.

West Chester totaled six first-place finishes in the 10 events contested on day two, four of which came from the men in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and the 400-yard medley relay.

In the 500 free, Chris Salomone led a 1-2 West Chester finish as he turned in an NCAA 'A' cut time of 4:33.57 to capture the title after he finished third last season. Teammate Matt Golebiewski, who entered the championships with the fifth-fastest time in Division II this season at 4:32.14, placed second with a 'B" cut time of 4:39.35.

The Golden Rams' Marek Malopolski took home first in the 200 IM in a time of 1:54.28 after entering as the top-seed. He edged out IUP's Pawel Glowiak who finished for the second-straight year in 1:54.70.

Meanwhile, the team of Golebiewski, Brendan Fanslau, Josh Pauley and Bill Marcum teamed up to take first in the 200 free relay before Markum, Malopolski, Devin Canfield and Ben Kuntz won the 400 medley relay. Both squads entered the championships as the top seeds.

On the women's side captured victories in the 200 free relay and 50-yard freestyle with 'A' cut times. Kate Jones, Megan Bauer, Kristen Montello and Jackie Borkowski opened the night with a Golden Ram victory in the 200 free for the second-straight year before Borkowski captured her second consecutive title in the 50 free with a new championship meet record of 23.65 seconds.

Borkowski, who entered the championships with the nation's top time in the event, broke a 21-year old record held by Tina Bair of Clarion who set the record of 23.68 seconds back on Feb. 20, 1986. Clarion's Kaitlyn Johnson also posted an 'A' cut time of 23.87 seconds to finish second.

Clarion totaled two first-place finishes and four runner-up performances Friday night, highlighted by Ryan Thiel's 'A' cut time of 20.64 seconds in the 50 free and the team of Johnson, Lori Leitzinger, Denise Simens and Gina Mattucci who took home the top spot in the 400-yard medley relay with an 'A' cut mark of 3:53.67.

Thiel boasts the third-fastest time in Division II this season and won his first title after finishing third a year ago while the Golden Eagles' women's 400 medley relay team bested the West Chester team of Borkowski, Rachael Gale, Erin Fischer and Kristen Montello who were the defending champions and also posted an 'A' cut time of 3:55.46.

Other winners on Friday night included Kutztown's Ashley Singer in the women's 500 free as she edged out Danielle Ierley of West Chester by 0.17 seconds, and Edinboro's Brooke Heath who won the women's 200-yard individual medley with an 'A' cut time of 2:06.00. Heath finished second last year.

The 2008 PSAC Swimming Championships continue on Saturday with prelim competition at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
