Kaitlin Jones Wins Three As Penn State Sweeps Villanova on Senior Day

The Penn State Nittany Lions concluded their regular season on Saturday with two wins over in-state rival Villanova.

Senior Kaitlin Jones was the star on the day for the Penn State women as she won three events. She started the day anchoring the winning 200 medley relay team (1:41.37) alongside Allie Pennetti, Haley Sinatro and Kaitlin Saloky. A few minutes later, Jones won the 200 free, finishing just ahead of teammate Alyson Ackman with a 1:48.33 to Ackman’s 1:48.61. Jones then won the 100 free with a 51.58 but it did not count as Penn State elected to exhibition the second half of the meet.

Fellow senior Allie Pennetti won the 100 back at 55.35 and was a member of the winning 400 free relay team (3:26.03). Joining her on the relay was Monika Gonzalez-Hermosillo, Nicole Price and Saloky.

The Lions also picked up two wins from senior Melissa Rodriguez. She won both breaststroke events with a 1:02.11 100 and 2:15.30 200. Junior Katelyn Sowinski and sophomore Price were also double winners on the day for the Lions. Sowinski won the 200 fly (2:00.56) and the 500 (4:53.65). Price won the 50 free (23.51) and the 100 fly (53.80).

Other event winners on the day for Penn State were Casey Francis in the 1000 (9:59.71) and Megan Wujciak in the 200 IM (2:03.79). Villanova’s lone win on the day came from Darby Goodwin in the 200 back with a 2:03.71.

The Penn State men also had a dominating day against Villanova winning all 14 events in the pool on Saturday.

Sophomore Zach Kantz won three events on the day for the Lions as he was on two winning relays and won the 100 free. Kantz anchored the winning 200 medley relay team (1:31.42) with Tomer Zamir, Andrew Schuehler and Matt Grillo. Kantz then won the 100 free at 46.59 and swam the third leg on the winning 400 free relay team (3:05.47). Joining him on the last relay was Robert Bantley, Ryan O’Neill and Tim Maurer.

The other double event winners were all on the first medley relay. Zamir won the 100 back (50.29), Schuehler won the 100 breast (56.46) and Grillo won the 50 free (20.76). Grillo was on the winning 400 free relay team that finished first, but they were disqualified. Tim Maurer was also a double winner on the day with a 49.98 in the 100 fly.

Other event winners on the day for Penn State were Robbie Dickson in the 1000 (9:37.79), Matthew Stasiunas in the 200 free (1:39.87), JP Cervone in the 200 fly (1:51.79), David Gross in the 200 back (1:52.53), Gunther Cassell in the 200 breast (2:05.37), Matthew Guenter in the 500 (4:34.64) and Nathaniel Bledsoe in the 200 IM (1:55.15).

The Penn State men won the meet 151-104 while the women won 153-125.
