Penn Hires Megan Shaffer as Assistant Coach
The University of Pennsylvania last week hired Megan Shaffer as an assistant coach. She joins the staff of head coach Mike Schnur after two seasons as an assistant at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Shaffer helped the Black Knights win the Patriot League men’s championship in 2024-25, working with 38 individual conference champions across programs. In that time, Army had 11 NCAA qualifiers, seven All-Americans, two Patriot League Swimmers of the Meet and set 20 conference records.
“I’m so honored and excited to join Penn swim and dive! A huge shoutout to Mike for giving me this amazing opportunity, and to all the teams and coaches that I’ve worked with thus far in my career,” Shaffer said in a press release. “I’m ready to get to work and have a great season. Let’s go!”
A native of Berwick, Pa., Shaffer swam at Susquehanna University. She was a 15-time finalist in the Landmark Conference, earning four all-conference nods and serving as a team captain. She graduated in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and publishing & editing.
She began coaching in 2021-22 at Division III Franklin & Marshall, which finished 17th at the NCAA men’s championships for the program’s highest ever finish. She moved up to Division I at Colgate as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, helping the men’s team score the most points at the conference meet since 2018 and the women since 2016.
“I am thrilled to add Megan to our coaching staff,” Schnur said. “Her experiences at West Point over the past two years coincided with the incredible success both of their teams enjoyed, I am looking forward to her contributing the same energy, excitement, and knowledge to the Quakers!”
