ParaPan American Games Competitors Set 15 World Records in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, August 20. LAST week, Paralympians set the pool on fire at the ParaPan American Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In sum, spectators witnessed 15 separate world-record readouts throughout the competition.

The men completely dominated the record books at the event with 14 of the 15 global standards.

Brazil's Clodoaldo Silva crushed the S4 division with world records in five events, while lowering a pair of event standards twice. Silva touched in 34.69 in the 50 free, while also setting the 100 free record with a time of 1:16.99. He twice eclipsed the 200 free with a preliminary time of 2:51.81 and a finals effort of 2:50.30. He returned in the 50 fly to match the effort with a 44.41 in prelims before cutting that record even further with a 42.18 in finals. He finished his world-record onslaught with a 2:32.57 in the 150 IM.

Silva's teammate Andre Esteves posted three world records of his own in the S10 division. He surpassed the 50 free with a time of 24.07, while also taking out the 100 free in 52.35. He completed the trifecta with a 100 fly time of 57.55.

Three other men set world records at the meet as Brazil's Daniel Dias touched in 2:37.72 in the S5 200 free, while Mexico's Juan Reyes hit the wall in 45.11 in the S4 50 back. Meanwhile, Canada's Benoit Huot clocked a 2:14.57 in the SM10 200 IM. Finally, Brazil's men's 200 medley relay in the 20 points division registered a 2:33.59 global standard.

Canada's Valerie Grand Maison secured the lone women's world record with a time of 4:36.51 in the S13 division 400 free.
