Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships: Jessica Long Keeps Rolling With Third World Record

EDMONTON, Canada, August 14. TEAM USA continues to take the pool by storm at the 2011 Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships, winning eight gold, six silver and one bronze medal on the third day of competition.

One of those gold medals came from Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) as she took top honors in the 100m freestyle (S8) in a new world record time of 1:06.50. That was Long's fourth gold medal in four individual events and her third world record of the meet.

Long picked up another gold medal with teammates Susan Beth Scott (Cape Girardeau, Mo.), Anna Eames (Golden Valley, Minn.) and Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn.) who won the women's 34-point medley relay in a new American record time of 5:03.59.

"We had a lot of fun and we are already figuring out how to go faster in London," said women's team captain Eames.

The remaining gold medals for the women came in the 100m freestyle events with Weggemann taking out the S7 category and Kelley Becherer (Sheboygan, Wis.) winning the S13 category. U.S. women also won three silver medals in the 100m freestyle events: Scott in the S10 category, Elizabeth Stone (Grand Rapids, Mich.) in the S9 category and Cortney Jordan (Henderson, Nev.) in the S7 category.

The Team USA men also had several incredible performances on the night as four athletes took gold in the 100m backstroke events. Lantz Lamback (Augusta, Ga.) won the S7 category; Tom Miazga (Milwaukee, Wis.) topped the podium in the S8 category; Michael Prout (West Springfield, Mass.) came in first in the S9 category and Justin Zook (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won the S10 category.

"It's nice to see our guys stepping up and bringing home multiple medals," said men's team captain Zook. "Obviously the American women are known for bringing home multiple medals in swimming, but it's great for our entire team that the men are following suit."

The U.S. earned two more medals in the 100m backstroke events as Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Bloomington, Calif.) won silver in the S8 race and Tucker Dupree (Raleigh, N.C.) won silver in the S12 race.

Rounding things out for the men were Michael DeMarco (San Diego, Calif.) who took silver in the 50m breaststroke (SB2), and Roy Perkins (Del Mar, Calif.) who won bronze in the 50m backstroke (S5).

All 19 Team USA athletes have won at least one medal at this week's competition and the Americans have hauled in a total of 46 medals, leading the overall medal count by three over Australia.
