IRVINE, California, August 18. USA's Ryan Lochte put together a swift effort in the men's 200 free with a winning time at the Pan Pacific Championships.

Lochte touched in 1:45.30 for the win, lowering his personal best from a 1:45.61 and beating Paul Biedermann's top-ranked time of 1:45.47 set at the European Championships. That swim nearly put Lochte among the top 10 performers of all time as Peter Vanderkaay owns the cutoff with a 1:45.14 from the 2008 Olympics.

The win gave the U.S. its second straight in the event at Pan Pacs, defending Klete Keller's title from 2006. Prior to that, Australia had won the event in 1997 (Michael Klim), 1999 (Ian Thorpe) and 2002 (Ian Thorpe).

Korea's Tae Hwan Park checked in with a second-place time of 1:46.27 to improve to sixth in the world, while Vanderkaay completed the podium with a third-place effort of 1:46.65 to clip his season best of 1:46.66 to remain in seventh in the world.

Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes (1:47.23) and Kenrick Monk (1:47.37) placed fourth and fifth, while South Africa's Jean Basson took sixth in 1:47.43. Japan's Yuki Kobori (1:48.42) and Yoshihiro Okumura (1:49.28) also competed in the championship field.

USA's Ricky Berens topped the B final in 1:47.45, just off his season best of 1:47.09 set at the U.S. Nationals that ranked him in the top 15 in the world.
