Pan Pacific Championships: Night Two Heat Sheets; Can USA Take Down WR in Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay?
The second night session of the Pan Pacific Championships will end with the men’s 800-meter freestyle relay, where the United States will take aim at the world record that has endured for 17 years. At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, the foursome of Michael Phelps, Ricky Berens, David Walters and Ryan Lochte clocked 6:58.55. Could that mark go down at the William Woollett Aquatics Center?
The men’s 800 freestyle relay will be the capper on a 10-event schedule that will open with men’s and women’s finals in the 400 individual medley. World-record holder Summer McIntosh is the heavy favorite for gold in the women’s event while Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita is the top seed in the men’s event and was the silver medalist in the 400 IM at the 2024 Olympic Games and last summer’s World Championships.
Finals will also be contested in the women’s and men’s 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 50 backstroke, along with the women’s 800 freestyle relay. Americans Gretchen Walsh and Jack Alexy are the top seeds in the 100 freestyle events while Kate Douglass and Van Mathias will chase titles in the 100 breaststrokes.
