Pan Pacific Championships: Day Four Prelims Heat Sheets; Showdown in Women’s 50 Freestyle on Tap
The final day of the Pan Pacific Championships kicks off on Saturday morning and it’s not difficult to identify the most-anticipated event. The women’s 50-meter freestyle will have training partners Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglass square off, a meeting of the two-fastest female swimmers in history. Earlier this summer, Douglass set the world record in the 50 freestyle, going 23.59, only to have Walsh break the mark with a 23.55 clocking a week later.
American Jack Alexy will begin his quest for a sprint double in the men’s 50 freestyle, the Cal-Berkeley star already the champion of the 100 freestyle. Prior to the 50 freestyle events, the women’s and men’s 200 individual medley disciplines will jumpstart the morning session and include racing from world-record holder Summer McIntosh and Shaine Casas, the silver medalist at last summer’s World Championships.
There will also be prelims in the women’s and men’s 200 breaststroke, while the slower heats of the women’s 800 freestyle and men’s 1500 freestyle will be conducted. The men’s 200 breaststroke will feature Japan’s Shin Ohashi, a rising star who is the world junior record holder and was the silver medalist in the 100 breaststroke.
