GOLD COAST, Australia, August 21. THERE’s little doubt that Cate Campbell is going to take a run at her Commonwealth and Australian record tonight as she dropped an amazing time of 52.62 this morning in 100-meter freestyle qualifying at the Pan Pacific Championships.  That swim not only smashed Natalie Coughlin’s 2010 Pan Pacific Championships record of 53.67, it also clipped Campbell’s Australian All Comers mark of 52.68 from the Australian Nationals this year.  It also moved her to the top of the world, ahead of Sarah Sjostrom’s world-leading 52.67 from the European Championships.

Cate’s sister Bronte made her way into the championship heat as well with a pretty strong 53.50, although she has a third-ranked 52.86 to her credit from the Commonwealth Games.  Australia actually went 1-2-3 in prelims with Melanie Schlanger posting a 53.65 as Coughlin’s Pan Pacs record actually went down in three straight heats with Schlanger, Bronte and Cate all taking out the mark.  Schlanger, however, will be relegated to the B final.

USA’s Missy Franklin (53.75) and Simone Manuel (53.91) finished fourth and fifth to move on to the A final, while Canada’s Chantal Van Landeghem (9th, 54.73), Japan’s Miki Uchida (10th, 54.86), and Canada’s Victoria Poon (12th, 55.06) were the beneficiaries of the two-per-country rule as a host of swimmers from Australia and the U.S. were bumped out of the big final.
