Pair of YMCA Records Fall on First Night of YMCA National Championships
COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, July 31. WHILE the big guns were showing off their stuff in Indianapolis, Ind., at the USA Swimming National Championships, the YMCA swimmers were breaking a pair of meet standards.
Scott Marino, 17, of Fanwood Scotch broke a 15-year-old record in the men's 200 IM with a time of 2:07.29. The previous record had stood since 1992. Meanwhile, Caroline Smith, 16, of Winston-Salem snared the women's 400 free standard with a time of 4:19.91. She surpasses Emily Brunemann's 4:20.60 set on July 27, 2004.
Collin Ohning of Middle Tyger posted the lone individual double with wins in the 50 breast (30.24) and free (24.35), while Jim Barbiere, 17, of Countryside won the men's 100 back in 59.36 and Travis McNamara, 17, of Cheshire claimed the men's 400 free in 4:04.97 to conclude the men's side of the meet.
Sarah Galvin, 16, of BR Ryall won the women's 100 back in 1:05.69, while Lindsey Graessle of Countryside captured the 50 breast in 33.95. Katya Bachrouche, 17, of Farmington took home the women's 200 IM in 2:22.41, while Emily Lloyd, 14, of Anne Arundel became the youngest winner of the night with a 26.69 in the women's 50 free.
