Pac-12 Women’s Championships, Day Two Finals: Stanford’s Brooke Forde Takes Title in 500 Free

Day Two Finals, Houston Texas

Coming off a sweep of the relay events on the first day of Pac-12 Conference championship action, Cal-Berkeley and Stanford battled in the first three individual events contested on the second day of the competition. A showdown between Stanford teammates Brooke Forde and Morgan Tankersley kicked off the evening’s action, and Stanford jumped into the team lead off its depth. Here is a look at the Night Two events.

500 Freestyle

Because the NCAA Championships were canceled last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Stanford’s Brooke Forde remains the defending champion from her title in 2019, and she wasn’t about to let the 2021 Pac-12 Conference crown get away. Forde posted a winning time of 4:37.07, and needed every bit of that performance to hold off hard-charging teammate Morgan Tankersley (4:37.11).

Forde led Tankersley from start to finish, but Tankersley did all she could to press her teammate. At the 300-yard mark, Forde led by .77 over Tankersley, with that margin down to .54 at the 400. Although Tankersley ate into her deficit over the last 100, Forde showed grit and got her hand on the wall first.

The Cal duo of Ayla Spitz (4:38.05) and Robin Neumann (4:39.96) placed third and fourth in a final that was made up entirely of Stanford and Cal athletes. Fifth place went to Stanford’s Isabel Gormley in 4:41.34.

200 Individual Medley

The head-to-head duel between Cal and Stanford continued in the 200 individual medley as the Bears followed the Cardinal’s one-two finish in the 500 freestyle with a top-two showing of their own. Alicia Wilson turned in a wire-to-wire victory, ultimately stopping the clock in 1:53.65 for a two-plus-second win over Cal freshman Isabelle Stadden (1:55.80).

Wilson opened with a butterfly split of 24.67, the fastest in the field, and never looked back. She went through the midway point in 53.25 and expanded her lead with a 32.92 breaststroke split, which was easily the fastest of the eight finalists. For good measure, she came home in 27.48, recording another split faster than any other athlete in the final.

Stadden, who figures to be a major force later in the meet in the backstroke events, grabbed second place ahead of Southern California’s Isabelle Odgers, who took third in 1:56.51. Stanford continued to pile up the points as Hannah Kukurugya (1:56.67) and Janelle Rudolph (1:58.01) were fourth and fifth.

50 Freestyle

At least for one event, the Blue Bloods of the conference, Stanford and Cal, were not the headliners as Washington State’s Chloe Larson emerged victorious in the 50 freestyle. Larson checked in with a winning time of 22.18 and became the first swimmer not from Stanford or Cal to earn a conference crown in 2021.

Claire Grover of UCLA, Eloise Riley of Cal and Kaitlyn Dobler of USC posted a rare, three-way tie for second, as each woman touched in 22.24. There was also a tie for fifth place as Anicka Delgado of USC and Anya Goeders of Stanford had matching times of 22.28.

200 Freestyle Relay

Make it three relay victories in as many attempts for Cal, as the Bears easily won the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Eloise Riley, Emily Gantriis, Elise Garcia and Isabel Ivey combined for a winning effort of 1:26.84, which was nearly a second quicker than the 1:27.81 mark of Stanford. Ivey, who presumably will attempt an individual double later in the meet, handled the anchor duties in 21.14.

Stanford utilized its depth and a strong all-around day to leap into first place in the team standings, and relied on the team of Anya Goeders, Amalie Fackenthal, Lauren Green and Emma Wheal in the sprint relay. Meanwhile, USC was third with freshman Kaitlyn Dobler leading off in 22.26 for the Trojans.
