Ostrava Grand Prix Sees Verraszto Siblings Shine
The Czech Republic hosted its Ostrava Grand Prix during the weekend.
Many of the top Czech swimmers competed at the Ostrava Grand Prix, which also saw several other European swimmers participate and swim well, mostly from Hungary.
Czech Republic swimmer Simona Kubova won two events to lead the home country performance at the meet. She won the 200-meter back in 2:12.22 and the 50 back in 28.44.
Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto stole the show with three gold medals during the meet. She won the 200-meter free in 2:04.21, claimed victory in the 100 free (57.83) and won the 100 fly in 1:01.29.
She nearly pulled off a fourth gold with a 28.08 in the 50 fly, but finished two hundredths behind Czech Republic’s Zuzana Volovecka, who finished in 20.86.
Her brother, David Verraszto, competed as well at the Ostrava Grand Prix, winning gold in the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.49.
Hungary’s Liliana Szilagyi won the 200 fly in 2:13.80. Compatriot Bence Biczo won the men’s 200 fly in 1:59.66 and 200 free in 1:53.94. Gabor Balog swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50 in 26.14, the 100 in 55.81 and the 200 in 2:03.64.
