KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, October 16. The University of Tennessee Orange team edged the White team Thursday night as the Volunteers kicked off the 2014-2015 season with their annual Orange and White meet.

Tennessee Press Release

Coming off a loss at the Orange and White Intrasquad meet a season ago, the Orange team earned the victory this time around Thursday at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.

After entering the meet with a 40-point edge in spirit competitions earlier in the week, the orange team was paced by its women’s efforts and jumped out to a commanding lead. Team Orange fought off a strong white team performance to take back the meet by a final score of 330-265.

The women in orange controlled their half of the meet, winning 13 of 16 events to give the orange team a massive boost on the scoreboard. Faith Johnson earned a pair of victories in the 50-yard freestyle (23.23 seconds) and 100-yard freestyles (51.43), while Anna DeMonte also earned a pair of wins in the 100 butterfly (57.15) and the 200 individual medley (2:06.17) on either side of the second diving break.

Lauren Driscoll earned wins in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard freestyle. Driscoll, Mary Griffith and Caroline Finkbeiner placed 1-2-3 in the 200 free, while Orange picked up solo victories from Morgan Dickson (1000 Free, 10:10.12), Molly Hannis (100 Breast, 1:06.59) and Amanda Carner (200 Breast, 2:22.82).

The White team, meanwhile, was led by its core of male swimmers, who won 11 of 16 events to keep the score close until the last event. In his first intrasquad meet, Sam McHugh won three events (500 free, 200 fly, 200 IM), while Jimmy Dagley won the 100-yard backstroke (51.27) and 200-yard backstroke (1:53.44). Sean Lehane (200 Free, 1:40.79), Evan Pinion (1000 Free, 9:18.85), Jacob Thulin (100 Fly, 49.33) and Ross Dibblin (200 Breast, 2:07.90) each recorded victories for the white team.

Meanwhile, in the diving well, the orange team asserted its control in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. Sarah Chewning earned a sweep in both events, needing a great final dive to win the 1-meter over teammate Samantha Lera, while Mauricio Robles put together two strong efforts to earn a sweep of his own.

Tennessee will open up its home regular season schedule Oct. 31, when it hosts Indiana and Kentucky at the AJIAC at 3 p.m.
