Olympic Trials Wave I Day One Prelims: Haebig Swims 1:01.5 100 Back; Spink, Massey Take Top Seeds

The first morning of the 2021 Olympic Trials Wave I in Omaha kicked off Friday morning in Nebraska at the Chi Health Center with the heats of the 100 free, 200 fly and 100 back.

Nebraska’s Autumn Haebig had a nice drop in the heats of the 100 back with a 1:01.58, coming down from a 1:01.91 on her seed to grab lane four for tonight’s final. The top two in each event will earn a chance to swim in Wave II June 13 – 20 if they so desire. Haebig, who swam at Nebraska this year, is seeded ahead of Arkansas’ Kobie Melton (1:01.77) and Cal’s Tea Laughlin (1:02.37) with spots in Wave II on the line. Also in that final heat tonight is 17-year-old Tatum Wall (1:02.82) of Nation’s Capital Swim Club as a name to watch for the future.

Wall’s NCAP teammate Camille Spink was the lone swimmer to break 56 seconds in the heats of the 100 free as she swam a 55.63. The 16-year-old is ahead of a trio of swimmers born in 2004 with 17-year-old Kristina Paegle (56.04) and 16-year-old Zoe Skirboll (56.13) seeded second and third with the original top seed Mykenzie Leehy of Houston in fourth at 56.17. It should be a tightly contested field with the top two advancing to the second Wave June 13 – 20 as 2018 juniors champ Christiana Regenauer (56.24) also in contention.

Nashville Aquatic Club’s Alex Massey swam a best time in the 200 butterfly with a 2:13.01 in the heats as she is ahead of Emma Sticklen of Texas at 2:13.20. 17-year-old Casey Cullen of Plymouth Whitemarsh is third with a new best at 2:13.76 while Caroline Sheble (2:14.08) is fourth ahead of Mackenzie McConagha (2:14.11).

Ohio State’s Sally Tafuto put in the top time in the 800 free timed finals with an 8:49.18.
