By Gisela Mohring

BOSTON, July 14. ON Friday, July 19, Olympic swimmers Janel Jorgensen, Ashley Tappin, Jenny Thompson, and Eric Wunderlich will challenge the cold waters of Boston Harbor help raise funds for the David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

They will join 65 novice swimmers who will take the plunge in the 7th annual Boston Harbor Islands Swim, a 22-mile relay-style open-water swim organized by Swim Across America.

The swim starts and finishes at Rowes Wharf in downtown Boston. Jorgensen, Tappin, Thompson and Wunderlich will be among the swimmers who will make waves in the harbor waters in an effort to raise more than $250,000.

Each participant is assigned to a transport boat, which will carry the athletes as they rotate swimming approximately three-to-five 15-minute sessions throughout the day.

Applicants are required to raise a minimum of $1,500 by soliciting support and sponsorship. All funds will benefit the David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life
Program at Dana-Farber. Established in 1992, the Perini program provides medical, educational and psychosocial services to help survivors of childhood
cancer cope with the long-term side effects of their treatments. The program also leads research projects in the effort to reduce and to eliminate the negative aspects of life-saving treatments for current pediatric patients.

Swim Across America has teamed up with Dana-Farber for the past six years. Beginning in 1987, Swim Across America, Inc. joined in the fight against cancer by working to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, prevention, and treatment through swimming events.
