Ohio vs. Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, January 8. OHIO Swimming and Diving started off the new year in impressive fashion Friday, defeating Youngstown State in a dual meet by a final score of 146-94. The Bobcats did a tremendous job across the board, placing first in 12 of the day’s 13 events.

“We didn’t really know what to expect, with not having competed in so long and coming off winter training,” said head coach Greg Werner. “We really talked about competing and executing well more than the final result. I felt like they competed very, very well and I felt like they executed their events very well, which ultimately lead to some very nice performances.”

The `Cats (4-2, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) started off the meet in a strong way, taking both first and second in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Rachel Heim (San Diego, Calif.), Allison Schaefer (Medina, Ohio), Ashley Poitinger (Akron, Ohio) and Katey Brooks (North Royalton, Ohio) swam a 1:49.69 in the event, touching first.

Caitlin Drozin (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and Abby Corcoran (Tucson, Ariz.) followed up that performance by taking first and second, respectively, in the ensuing 500 Freestyle.

The lone event won by the Penguins on Friday was the 200 Breaststroke, where Samantha Roberts touched first with a 2:27.31. Youngstown State grabbed first and second in this event as Penguin Rachel Tano was just a few seconds behind her teammate with a 2:32.99.

Lauren Funk turned in a solid performance while swimming the 50 Free, taking first place with her time of 24.31. The true freshman from Springfield, Ohio, narrowly missed a season-best time in the event.

MaryRose Hillstrom (Dimondale, Mich.) had a solid day on the one-meter board Friday, taking first place with her 243.97. She then scored a 181.80 and took third on the three-meter board, an event which was won by teammate Amy Bromberg (Deerfield, Ill.) and her score of 222.67.

Sophomore Kristen Witham (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had a great day for the Bobcats, taking first place in both the 200 IM and the 200 Backstroke. She proved her versatility by winning a Backstroke event in Friday’s competition, as she is normally a Freestyle and IM swimmer.

“Kristen has been training very well,” said Werner. “She’s been having a great year and it’s nice to see her hard work pay off.”

Chelsey Bower (Bethel Park, Pa.) picked back up right where she left of in 2009, taking first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:55.29. Not far behind her was teammate Stella Johnson (Jacksonville, Fla.) who touched in 2:00.22.

Brooks and Annika Games (Brea, Calif.) both had solid days as well, winning the 100 Free and 1000 Free, respectively.

The Bobcats will be back in action tomorrow when they host the Denison Big Red at the Ohio University Aquatic Center. First event is set to start at one p.m.
