Ohio vs. Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio, November 7. FOR a second-straight day, the University of Toledo swimming and diving team unseated a conference power, as the Rockets took 10 of 16 events en route to a 180-114 win over Ohio University in front of a raucous crowd at the Student Rec Center Pool. The victory pushed the Rockets to 8-1 on the season, 4-0 in MAC action, and came less than 24 hours after another convincing MAC win over Miami University.

Head coach Lars Jorgensen had been a little concerned about how his team would recover with such a short turnaround, but any concerns were put to rest early as the Rockets took the first three events and jumped to a 46-9 lead.

"Our girls responded to the challenge this weekend," Lars Jorgensen, head coach, said. "Ohio is one of the favorites in the MAC. This was a really good meet and we had a lot of contributors today. A lot of our girls swam better than they did yesterday."

The 200 medley relay team of senior Ashley Cusack (Willow Springs, IL), sophomore Laura Lindsay (Uniontown, OH), junior Amanda Thompson (Monroe, MI) and senior Katie White (Leland, MI) started the day with a convincing win in a time of 1:43.91, leading the relay wire-to-wire. Junior Jacy Dyer (Lebanon, PA) followed with another strong performance in the 1000 free, leading a Rocket sweep of the top-three spots in a time of 10:05.01.

Freshman Carly Harter (North Huntingdon, PA) led throughout the 200 free and took the win in 1:52.24. Cusack stayed close to Rachel Heim, the defending MAC Champion in the 100 back, and took second in 57.80, six-tenths of a second behind Heim. Lindsay (1:04.83) then led a Toledo one-two finish in the 100 breast with sophomore Kelsey Atchison (Silver Lake, OH), and Toledo pushed its lead to 68-25.

Freshman Kenzie Bagan (Roanoke, IN) added to Toledo's point total by sparking a top-three sweep in the 200 fly, and White rallied against defending MAC Champion Chelsey Bower in the final 10 yards to score a win in the 50 free that extended Toledo's lead to 96-35. After Harter took second in the 100 free, Cusack pulled away from the pack over the final 100 yards in the 200 back to take first in a time of 2:04.71.

Lindsay and Atchison followed with another one-two showing, this time in the 200 breast, and Dyer breezed her way to a win in the 500 free in 4:58.38 as Toledo again took the top-three spots. Thompson placed second in the 100 fly, but Harter followed with a victory in the 400 IM in front of senior Caitlin Cormack (Bedford, OH) and Dyer.

Today's meet wrapped up the first half of the dual schedule for Toledo, who won't compete again until Dec. 4-5 at the Eastern Michigan Invitational. Jorgensen said he's pleased with the progress of the team over the opening month of competition but that the team still has plenty of work to do before the MAC Championships in February.

"We still need to get to a higher level for the MAC Championships," Jorgensen said. "The conference meet is all about depth, and we're getting better at developing that this season."
