Ohio vs. Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 28. TAKING first in all but three events, the Ohio swimming and diving team earned its first win of the weekend as the Bobcats cruised to a victory Friday over Duquesne by a final score of 142-98.

Ohio (7-2, 3-1 MAC) saw a variety of swimmers finish well in the events. Anastasia Bocharnikova (Nizhny Tagil, Russia) started the action with a narrow first-place finish in the 50 Back with a time of 27.75, while Katie Power (Ottawa, Ontario) and Kristyn Repke (Cary, N.C.) followed up in third and fourth place with times of 29.10 and 29.12, respectively.

Liz Bishop (Hales Corners, Wisc.) continued her recent late-season success, placing first in the 50 Breast with a time of 31.94, while Lauren Funk (Springfield, Ohio) and Morgan Sprosty (Irvine, Calif.) finished fourth and fifth with times of 32.52 and 32.61, respectively. The senior-freshman duo of Rachel Heim (San Diego, Calif.) and Molly Slattery (Fredericksburg, Va.) dominated the 50 Fly, as the pair took first and second with times of 25.64 and 26.76, respectively.

The 1000 Free saw three Bobcats atop the leader board as Laurin Williams (Shoreline, Wash.), Annika Games (Brea, CAlif.), and Kristen Witham (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished first, second and third with times of 10:25.54, 10:35.09, and 10:37.87, respectively. Stacey Huber (Gainesville, Fla.) and Katey Brooks (North Royalton, Ohio) then increased Ohio's lead in the 200 Free as they took first and second with times of 1:56.65 and 1:58.48, respectively.

The junior trio of Annie Donovan (Findlay, Ohio), Amanda Cecere (Chelmsford, Mass.), and Abby Corcoran (Tucson, Ariz.) prevailed in the 50 Free as they took the top three spots with times of 24.53, 24.81 and 24.92, respectively. Duquesne would finally respond with a win in the 200 IM, but Cecere erased any possible momentum as she finished first in the 100 Fly with a time of 58.70. Repke and Caroline Meyer (Holland, Mich.) followed up in third and fourth with times of 59.46 and 1:00.29, respectively.

Bocharnikova grabbed her second first-place finish of the night in the 100 Free with a time of 54.03, while Sarah Owen (Portsmouth, Hampshire, England) built on her late-season emergence with a first-place finish in the 100 Back with a time of 58.38. Megan Gegesky (Grosse Ile, Mich.) rounded out the list of top finishers for Ohio soon after in the 500 Free as she won the event with a time of 5:14.20.

No divers for either team competed in the event.

The Bobcats hit the road again tomorrow as they travel to Morgantown, W. Va. to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers. Action is set to begin at noon.
