Dennis Pursley has served as the head coach of the U.S. National Team and of British Swimming, but in 2012, he returned to his alma mater, the University of Alabama, as head coach. In that time, Pursley has brought the Crimson Tide back to national relevance. Last season, his men’s team finished in sixth place at the NCAA championships, and although Alabama loses sprinter Kristian Gkolomeev, a third-straight top-ten finish is well within reach.

To discuss his team’s season and much more, Coach Pursley joined host David Rieder on Off Deck. Pursley explained how the teams are preparing for the SEC championships and also reflected on the 2016 season, when his men’s 200 medley relay squad won a national title.

Pursley described the scene that night of the relay victory and explained what the swimmers from that squad might have for an encore this season. He also discussed what some of his biggest surprises since coming to Alabama and how college coaching compares to his international stints.
