Notre Dame Women Lead Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., November 19. THE Notre Dame women lead the women's division going into the third day of the Minnesota Invite. The Fighting Irish are 26 points ahead of Wisconsin with a score of 598.

The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team are in fourth place after two of the three days of the Minnesota Invitational, Nov. 17-19 at the University Aquatic Center. Notre Dame holds the lead with 598 points, followed by Wisconsin with 572 points and Tennessee with 538. Minnesota has 372 points, while Nebraska is fifth with 219.5 points. The invite concludes tomorrow with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. and the finals at 3 p.m.

Minnesota finished third in the 200 medley relay to start the second day. The relay of Jennifer Hasling, Kim Kazika, Roxane Akradi and Stacy Busack combined for a time of 1:44.60. Kait Strickland led the Gophers in the 400 individual medley when she qualified for the A Final and finished eighth overall in a time of 4:27.79. Yuen Kobayashi and Christine Jennings, who normally compete in the freestyle events, each competed in the 400 IM and placed 11th (4:27.55) and 12th overall (4:29.06).

Although the Gophers did not have anyone compete in the 100 fly A Final, they had five compete in the B Final. Hasling led the team with an 11th-place finish and a time of 57.33, while Jenny Shaughnessy placed 12th in 57.65. Erin O'Neil and Jenny Chang each competed in the event and placed 13th (57.98) and 14th overall (58.22). Akradi rounded out the B Final with a time of 59.85 and a 16th-place finish.

Kazika led the Gophers in the 100 breaststroke with a 14th-place finish and a time of 1:06.47. Hasling won the 100 back in a time of 56.44, while Erin Forster placed seventh in the same event in a time of 57.58. The Gophers closed the night with a second-place finish in the 800 free relay. Minnesota's relay of Yuen Kobayashi, Meredith McCarthy, Jenny Shaughnessy and Christine Jennings clocked a time of 7:22.14, cutting a season-best time by three seconds and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. However, Notre Dame won the event in a time of 7:21.75 for the win.

In diving action, Brianna Hubbard placed sixth in the 1-meter event with a score of 240.80. Alexandra Barstad added a seventh-place finish and a score of 223.85.

The final events of the Minnesota Invite include the 1650 Free, the 200 Back, the 100 Free, the 200 Breast, the 200 Fly and the 400 Free Relay. Platform diving will be held at noon.
