Northwestern Quad Meet

EVANSTON, Illinois, November 6. NORTHWESTERN swept all three duals Saturday afternoon during a quad-meet at the Norris Aquatics Center, defeating UW-Milwaukee (190-104), UIC (194-99) and North Dakota (204-90).

Northwestern set the tone early on in the meet, sweeping the top-two positions in the 200 medley relay. The squad of Jacquie Godbe, Emily Russart, Alex Kraus and Liza Engstrom came in first with a 1:46.68, then the team of Jackie Powell, Kathleen Patterson, Marybeth Hall and Erin Reilly followed in 1:48.44 — out-touching the UIC `A' relay .26 of a second.

Freshman Megan Goss continued the strong start she has had to her collegiate distance career with a resounding win in the 1,650 free. Goss' 17:08.90 was more than 23 seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. Teammate Kate Stephensen placed third overall with a 17:44.84.

Meredith King, Meghan Cavanaugh and Erin Sosdian swept the 200 free, turning in times of 1:53.48, 1:54.64 and 1:55.01, respectively. Powell then was the Wildcats' top finisher in the 100 back with a 59.24, placing third among a tightly bunched top-four. She came in .02 of a second behind the second-place UIC swimmer and .14 in back of the winner from North Dakota.
Jenny Wilson won her first individual race of the year with a 1:05.23 in the 100 breast, coming from way behind at the halfway point to get the victory. Wilson trailed UW-Milwaukee's Emily McClellan by .75 of a second at the 50-yard mark before swimming a blazing 33.39 on the home stretch for a .11 of a second win.

After Wilson's first win of the year, freshman Becca Soderholm recorded the first win of her career. Soderholm topped the field in the 200 fly with a 2:06.84 while teammate Sheila O'Neill was third with a 2:09.59. Patterson swam a 2:06.61 exhibition time in the event for NU.

Heading into the mid-meet break, Engstrom was NU's top finisher in the 50 free with a time of 24.31 to place second overall.

Northwestern dominated the diving boards at the meet, first sweeping the top-three spots in the 3-meter event before doing the same on the 1-meter. Sophomore Felicitas Lenz recorded a career-best score of 330.00 to win over her sister, Cosima Lenz's, second-place total of 285.80 on the 3-meter board. Carlin Dacey was third for the `Cats with a 263.60. On the 1-meter board, Cosima topped Felicitas, 282.30-277.25, while Dacey again was third, this time with a 252.00.

Godbe and Hall went 2-3 overall for NU in the 100 free coming out of the break, turning in times of 52.60 and 52.66, respectively. As she was in the 100 back, Powell was the top Wildcat in the 200 back, this time coming in second with a 2:06.89.

Russart led a 1-2 Northwestern overall sweep of the 200 breast with a 2:21.66, more than a full second faster than teammate Meaghan Fenn's second-place time of 2:22.89. Patterson followed with a 5:04.85 in the 500 free to earn the victory before Hall won the 100 fly by 1.36 seconds in 57.35. Engstrom was third in the fly in 58.92.

Hannah Points ran away with the 400 IM to lead a 1-2-3 Northwestern sweep, though those scores all were exhibitioned out of the final tallies. Points swam a 4:25.66, Fenn had a 4:29.72 and Soderholm came in with a 4:30.27.

In the final 200 free relay, NU again took the top-two spots, and again exhibitioned those points out of the final scores. O'Neill, Reynolds, Godbe and Patterson had a winning time of 1:36.42 to out-touch the NU team of Hall, Cavanaugh, Kraus and Johnson by .51 of a second.

Northwestern returns to action at 5 p.m. CT Thursday, Nov. 11, at Wisconsin.
