Northern Colorado Press Release

The University of Northern Colorado swimming and diving team fell to New Mexico Friday evening after their first meet of the 2014-15 season with a total score of, 202.5-97.5.

“We performed fairly well tonight, “said head coach Kelly McClanahan. “We are a young and very small team in numbers, but I have every bit of confidence that the girls will get faster in the pool and stronger on the boards with every meet to come.”

The meet was made up of 14 events on the evening, starting off with the 400 yard medley relay. The Bears picked up their only win of the night in the second event, when sophomore Carleigh Barrett, downed the Lobos, in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:39.36, beating the competition by almost eleven seconds. Barrett is currently the second fastest to swim the 1000 yard freestyle and 200 fly in the program’s history. Barrett also holds the school record in the 500 free.

UNC finished respectively in the 100 yard freestyle, when Sydney Kovar came less than .45 of a second to UNM.

“In the end we simply could not put it all together for the win,” said McClanahan. “The point spread always looks daunting, but only a few hundredths of a second here and there, would have flipped the outcome.”

The Bears divers competed in the Wyoming Diving invitational this weekend, scoring well against the stiff competition. After the first day of diving, freshmen Savanah Meadows led all divers with a score of 235.95 in the 1 meter event. Also diving in the 1 meter for UNC, were Taylor Walsh with a score of 192.90 and Haley Schneider with a score of 181.35. Meadows notched the second highest score of the invite in the 3 meter dive with a score of 234.85.

“Savanna also had an excellent two days on the boards, and I really feel the rest of our divers are only going to get better from here on out,” said McClanahan.
