North Carolina Takes Tight Sweep over Virginia Tech

North Carolina picked up a pair of tight victories at Virginia Tech on Thursday, with the 19th-ranked men upsetting the No. 12 Hokies, 160-140.

On the women’s side, the 15th-ranked Tar Heels claimed a 177-123 win over No. 23 Va. Tech at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Ben Delmar and Martin Kartavi led the way on the men’s side. They started by teaming up with Colin Whelehan and PJ Foy to take home the win in the 200 medley relay in 1:24.44, a margin of .12 seconds over the Hokies.

Delmar went 51.58 to win the 100 breaststroke. His 1:51.88 claimed the 200 breast, Virginia Tech’s Eli Martin denied wins both times. Delmar capped the day with a time of 1:44.28 to capture the 200 individual medley that, paired with a win in the concluding 200 freestyle relay saw the Tar Heels over the line.

Kartavi was on that 200 free relay, his split of 18.93 coming second only to Foy’s 18.79. Sean Setzer and Nate Hohm rounded out the quartet that went 1:16.57. Kartavi won the 50 free in 19.38, edging Va. Tech’s Brendan Whitfield by two tenths, with Setzer third and Foy fourth.

Seb Lunak won the 200 butterfly in 1:44.00, with Whelehan second. Foy’s 46.48 was tops in the 100 fly. Rodolfo Vazquez scored 391.05 points to claim diving for the Tar Heels. Ciro Meija scored 429.90 to triumph in platform.

Whitfield won the 200 free in 1:34.95 for Virginia Tech, which did much of its damage in freestyle. Jakub Poliacik won the 1,000 in 9:03.91 and the 500 in 4:23.14. Javier Nunez’s time of 43.61 claimed the 100.

Andy Roose wont the 100 backstroke in 46.42, a Virginia Tech 1-2-3 with Levente Balogh and Connor Johnson. It was the same story and the same order in the 200, Roose getting to the wall first in 1:41.23.

Sophia Frei and Mary Macaulay led the North Carolina women. Frei led off the victorious Tar Heels 200 medley relay, teaming with Samantha Armand, Lillian Sawyer and Eden Goettsch to go 1:37.49.

Frei pulled off the backstroke double, winning the 100 in 51.75 and the 200 in 1:53.58.

Macaulay overcame a DQ in the 200 fly to win the 100 in 53.39 in a 1-2 with teammate Taylor Bloom and the 200 IM in 1:58.49.

UNC closed by winning the 200 free relay in 1:30.69 with Chloe Stinson, Mackenzie Headley, Sawyer and Goettsch. Lexie Ward won the 1,000 free in 9:50.83. Bloom went 1:56.45 to dominate the 200 fly. Sawyer’s 49.13 won the 100 free.

UNC dominated diving. Sofia Knight scored 321.68 to win 1-meter in a 1-2-3 result. Knight’s 317.10 won platform with Juliet Radich second.

Emily Santos pulled a fast breaststroke double to lead Virginia Tech. She won the 100 in 59.50, the second-best time in program history. Her 2:10.71 to claim the 200 was fourth in school history.

Chiara Klein did the mid-distance double, winning the 200 free in 1:45.99 ahead of Sawyer and the 500 free in 4:46.43. Alexandra Hrncarova won the 50 free in 22.30 with Elyse Wood second.
