North Carolina State Swimming Picks Up Wins Over Villanova

VILLANOVA – The North Carolina State swimming and diving teams picked up two more dual meet victories over host Villanova on Saturday morning, as the men won 170-85 and the women came out ahead 173.5-87.5 at the Villanova Swim Complex.

Notching the fastest time in 31 of the 32 events contested, the NC State swimming and diving team defeated Villanova Saturday morning inside the Aquatic Pavillion in its second straight dual meet.

The Wolfpack men won by a 170-85 margin and remain undefeated on the season, while the women posted a 173.5-87.5 victory over the Wildcats to capture their fifth win of the 2014-15 campaign.

Wolfpack Relays
From the women’s side the quartet of Lotta Nevalinen, Ashlyn Koletic, Lydia Jones and Natalie Labonge took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.97, while the team of Krista Duffield, Alexia Zevnik, Lauren Rhodes and Caroline Estep won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.69.

On the men’s squad the group of Soren Dahl, Derek Hren, Andreas Scheillerup and Scott Johnson claimed the top spot in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:31.98, and the team of Dahl, Jason Deana, John Newell and Christian McCurdy took the title in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:24.15.

Freestyle Watch
Rachel Muller repeated a first place finish in the 1000 free, swimming a time of 10:16.98. She also won the 1000 free event on Friday at Princeton.

McCurdy, Matt O’Donnel and Alex Hamilton took the top three spots in the men’s 1000 free, all touching the wall less than eight seconds apart.

Hamilton and Muller each swam the fastest time in the 500 free in their respective events, as Hamilton swam a 4:39.02 and Muller touched the wall with a 4:57.40.

Zevnik claimed first place in the 100 and 200 free events in similar fashion to Friday’s meet where she won the 100 and 200 backstroke events. She swam a 50.72 in the 100 and a 1:52.63 in the 200.

In the men’s 200 free, NC State finished claimed first through fourth. David Williams won the event with a time of 1:40.65, followed by Anton Ipsen (1:41.90), Hennessey Stuart (1:42.78) and Noah Franz (1:45.59).

In both 50 free events, the Wolfpack notched first, second and third place honors. Riki Bonnema won the women’s 50 free finishing with a 23.56, while Scott Johnson won the men’s event with a time of 21.12.

Back It Up
In the women’s 100 backstroke Koletic (56.09), Nicole Haynes (57.62) and Hannah Freyman (58.32) finished in a one, two, three fashion, while Stephen Coetzer (50.76), Jacob Siar (51.01) and Michael Camper (51.55) finished in identical fashion on the men’s side.

Nevalinen and Rhodes finished first and second in the women’s 200 back with times of 2:04.28 and 2:05.99, while NC State placed four at the top of the men’s event. Ryan Wilkinson (1:50.39), O’ Donnel (1:52.32), Camper (1:53.89) and Austin Snyder (1:55.84) represented the Pack on the men’s side.

Fly Into the Sky
Jones and Snyder took the top honor in the 200 fly in their respective events. Jones charted a time of 2:04.72 while Snyder swam a 1:53.56. On the women’s side Katelyn Linker and finished second in in the event with a 2:05.59 while her brother, Adam Linker, took second in the men’s event as he touched the wall with a 1:58.08.

The women’s 100 butterfly was the lone event NC State did not clinch the top spot in. Villanova’s Fiona Hardee won the event, as Poli (58.55), Linker (58.64) and Bonnema (58.56) finished second, third and fourth in the event.

In the men’s 100 fly, Williams (50.09), Stuart (50.84) and Johnson (51.87) posted the top three times in the event.

Breaststroke Action
NC State claimed the top four spots in the men’s and women’s 100 breast. Kayla Brumbaum swam a 1:03.62 to win the women’s event and was followed by Poli (1:07.25), Maddie Witzke (1:08.08) and Nicole Giamber (1:08.60).

Hren claimed the title in the men’s event with a time of 56.70 while Dahl (58.78), Geoffrey Carter (59.28) and Ryan Held (1:01.54) rounded out the top four for the Wolfpack men.

In the 200 breastroke Addisynn Bursch posted a time of 2:24.40 to win the women’s event while Ben Cono recorded the fastest time in the men’s event with a 2:07.72.

Individual Medleys
Coetzer and Koletic both won the 200 IM in their respective events, as Coetzer recorded a time of 1:51.65 and Koletic posted a time of 2:07.17.

Wolfpack Improvement
Two swimmers and recorded new top times for the 2014-15 season. The ‘Wolfpack Top Times’ consists of the top five times in a given season for each individual event, and the top three times in relay events.

NC State will return home for its next two matchups. The Wolfpack will host Minnesota on Jan. 23-24, then welcome ACC foe UNC-Capel Hill for its final dual meet of the season on Jan. 31 inside Casey Natatorium.

Villanova Women’s Press Release

The Villanova women’s swimming team (4-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) fell to the NC State Wolfpack by a final of 173.5 to 87.5 from the Villanova Swim Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats earned three second-place finishes and five third-place marks against the ACC opponent. Nova also had three first-place victories while NC State swam exhibition races towards the end of the event.

Junior Fiona Hardie (Hampshire, England/Bournemouth School), sophomore Jessica Randolph (Davie, Fla./American Heritage), senior Sara Jurek (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler) and junior Kaisla Kollanus (Hyvinkaa, Finland/Makelanrinteen Iukio) finished second in the 200 freestyle relay, coming in at 1:37.71.

In the 200 medley relay, the quartet of freshman Gabby Daigneault (Montreal, Quebec/William H. Hall), freshman Heather Farley (Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation), Hardie and senior Katrin Heider (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Herkenrath) touched the wall at 1:48.31 for a third-place mark.

Sophomore Emily Mayo (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe), winner of the last two BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week awards, earned a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle when she came in a 10:23.06. Freshman Caitlin Daday (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) followed closely behind at 10:27.94 for third in the race.

Heider tied for second in the 200 freestyle at 1:52.99. The time was less than three-tenths of a second from the victor at 1:52.63.

In the 200 backstroke, Daigneault clocked a time of 2:06.10 for third.

Freshman Mackenzie Niness (Sutton, Mass./Norte Dame Academy) touched the wall at 2:09.31 for the 200 butterfly, finishing third.

Kollanus also earned third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.90.

The 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 IM were raced after NC State had already secured the victory. Mayo swam a 4:57.68 in the free for first while Hardie came in at 58.43 for the fly victory. Jurek swam the 200 IM in 2:10.12 for first place.

Villanova Men’s Press Release

The Villanova men’s swimming team (0-7, 0-2 BIG EAST) dropped its dual event with the No. 17 NC State Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon from the Villanova Swim Complex by the final of 170-85.

The men finished second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:27.25 put in by sophomore Mike Rodriguez (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), senior Chris Tamanini (Kingston Twp., Pa./Dallas), freshman Joe Moleski (Tucson, Ariz./Bishop Guertin) and senior Jason Moyer (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh).

Senior Tony Sipala (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) finished second (2:16.11) while freshman Jake Hoin (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) came in third (2:19.30) for the 200 breaststroke.

Hoin also earned third in the 2:02.92 for the 200 butterfly event.

After NC State had secured the victory against the Wildcats, sophomore Greg Cino (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro), junior Pat Sullivan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and freshman John Paul Naughton (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) finished first through third in the 500 freestyle with times of 5:00.81, 5:10.37 and 5:10.48, respectively.

In the 100 butterfly, with the Wolfpack racing exhibition, junior Murphy Smith (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) finished first at 55.08 while junior Nikolai Tchobanov (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster High School) and freshman Logan Ziegler (Mechanicsville, Va./Maggie L. Walker) finished second and third with times of 55.57 and 55.94.

In the 200 IM, freshman Tyler Nussbaum (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Chaminade) clocked a time of 2:05.94 for first. Junior Ryan Murtha (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College High School) came in second at 2:06.03. Tchobanov earned third at 2:08.27.

The men race again tomorrow, Sun., Jan. 11 at the Villanova Swim Complex against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The dual meet will start at noon ET.
